The Scholls were key members of the White Rose, a student organization centered at the University of Munich that for several months (1942-43) prepared and disseminated anti-Nazi leaflets. Representing six years worth of diaries and letters, these well-edited extracts suggest how, over time, both brother and sister subconsciously prepared for the brave work they eventually undertook. It is simultaneously uplifting and agonizing to witness their gradual moral/philosophical development and their speedy capture and execution. Footnotes are valuable

Inge Jens has done a masterful job with the material she was given. A careful read notes the many gaps -- it's not that Hans and Sophie Scholl did not write anything during the gaps, it is more a matter that Dr. Jens was not allowed access to everything in the Scholl archives.
The book is worthwhile for the tiny glimpse it provides into the reality of the Scholl world, though the Aicher-Scholl censorship fairly obscures the remaining members of the White Rose.
Most of all, the book is worth reading because of Inge Jens' excellent research. Her footnotes provide information you won't find elsewhere.

I checked this book out of my library a few years ago and fell in love with it. Sophie and Hans are very open in their letters and journals, and it's rewarding to walk through their mental journey into the White Rose. Their story is inspiring. The book itself is in lovely condition and a pleasure to reread. Thank you!
