After seeing Chonda live in Chicago last year, I am convinced that she's our very own comedian angel sent by God to wake and shake us! Chonda's book is a true inspiration, but actually listening to her speak and sing is an even bigger treat. It's hard to find her tapes, both video and audio, but definately worthwhile to search for. I've purchased three extra books and tapes to give as presents. This is truly a MUST Buy for Christian women of all walks of life.

Changes the way you think about food and cooking

I've been cooking without recipes for 20 years now, pretty much since I could reach the counter, and I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals of home cooking.

Still, there are certain things that remained mystical. For some reason, we think of dough as something only a baker can make. It's not. It's 5 parts flour and 3 parts water. Home-made pies are too much trouble, right? Wrong. I can make a pie dough in less time than a typical TV commercial break (and now I know where the term 'easy as pie' came from). Homemade mayo is great, everyone knows that, but emulsions are hard to make and easy to break, right? Wrong. Just make sure you have the proper ratio of water to oil and you'll be fine (and you can easily re-emulsify if it does break).

If you're a novice in the kitchen, this book is going to really do a lot for you. You'll walk past the cake mixes and straight to the bags of flour. You'll find yourself never throwing leftovers away because leftovers+stock=fantastic soup. You'll transcend simple bread baking (which is still quite enjoyable) and discover the splendor of choux paste.

More importantly however, if you're very comfortable in the kitchen as I was, but still see a division between home cooking and fine cuisine, this is even more so the book for you. It will help bring things to your plate that you thought were reserved for the outer world. The best bread is the bread you bake. The best sauce is the sauce you dream up. The best soup is the one you made from scraps.

Of special note is the very important fact that everything in this book is not just possible, but it's easy as well. I am a big Alton Brown fan, and his endorsement of this book played a big part in my purchasing it, but ironically it was Alton himself that gave rise to much of my fear of trying to make certain types of food. As much as I love him, sometimes Alton makes things sound more complicated and delicate than they are. Ruhlman does the exact opposite and makes you realize just how simple most things are (or the foundations of those things at least). I've made some pretty bad stuff in my experiments so far, but the important thing is I know what made them bad and how to correct next time. I also understand how to manipulate ingredients to vary the results of the finished food (even when baking), which is priceless.

The bottom line is this: whether you're an experienced home cook or a slave to box mixes, you will learn a lot from Ratio and will be rewarded constantly. There hasn't been a Sunday morning since this book hit my door that hasn't been spent enjoying fresh, hot biscuits (3 parts flour, 1 part fat, 2 parts liquid; 5 minutes from brain to oven).

Ratios, period.

After reading through the book, I was left feeling that it should have offered me a lot more. Perhaps Mr. Ruhlman should have given the basic ratio, and then gone on to explain what the results would be. After that, he could have discussed how changing each ingredient in the ratio would change the results.

For example, a cook will get some decent bread by using the 5:3 ratio in the book and a standard breadmaking technique. However, if she reduces the water, the bread will be better for bagels and pretzels. If she increases the water, it will tend toward a ciabatta or pugliese. Changing the salt and yeast will affect the rise time and flavor. That's how knowing a ratio becomes useful. The cook knows altering it little in one direction will change the results in a predictable way. Some of this information was haphazardly indicated in the chapter introductions, but it would have been much more effective if it were thoroughly explained and organized in the context of the recipe ratio.

To me, this was the information missing that would have made this book an invaluable resource. It's not just knowing the ratios - it's knowing how to tweak them to get the results I want in each particular instance. I think any mid-level cook knows that adding a few herbs and spices to their homemade biscuits won't break the recipe. But if she wants to be able to tweak her basic biscuit recipe so that just a little more moist and tender to go with fried chicken, or a little more sturdy to stand up to a lot of sausage gravy, this book doesn't offer anything. Many problems with recipes can be solved by altering the ratio slightly: cookies spreading too much, cakes collapsing, biscuits not rising, bread too dense, pie dough overbrowning, etc. (Of course, these problems can also sometimes be solved by technique, but because technique is not the theme of the book, I'm not going to fault Mr. Ruhlman for hardly mentioning it.) If the book explained how slightly altering the standard ratio affects the result, not only could I have improvised the perfect biscuit for each situation, but I could have better used the book to fix unsatisfactory (but promising) recipes.

Since the entire book could probably be summed up in a chart (with baking times and temperatures when required), I think the price is way out of line with its value. Since most passionate home cooks probably already have a decent set of recipes that duplicate what the book offers, I can't say it's even worth the recipes. Two stars for a good idea.

essential home-cook revelations

Ever since Ruhlman first started pondering this book on his blog years ago, I've been eagerly anticipating its arrival, and it has not disappointed. The theory of ratio and its present and historical value are engagingly presented, and the book quickly ushers openminded readers to the kitchen to see these things at work themselves. So far I have baked two "experiments" I would never have had the bravery to tackle without this knowledge, and both have been educational and delicious accomplishments!

This is not a cookbook -- indeed, it is an anti-cookbook. Those expecting complex recipes, or the "best" way to make something, will be dissatisfied. This is a manual for real cooks who want to understand the fundamental underpinnings of what makes food FOOD in order to play, tweak, recontextualize, and personalize their methods in infinite variations. It's a book for culinary explorers who don't wish to be, pardon the pun, spoon-fed.

As always, Ruhlman's fresh, engaging, personal writing style leaves this an entertaining read even if you're not stopping every few pages to try your hand at the techniques. (If telling you it was a real page-turner while I was awaiting jury duty doesn't convince you, I don't know what will!)

About the Author
David Kroenke has many years of teaching experience at Colorado State University, Seattle University, and the University of Washington. He has led dozens of seminars for college professors on the teaching of information systems and technology; in 1991, the International Association of Information Systems named him Computer Educator of the Year. In 2009, David was named Educator of the Year by the Association of Information Technology Professionals-Education Special Interest Group (AITP-EDSIG).

David worked for the U.S. Air Force and Boeing Computer Services. He was a principal in the startup of three companies, serving as the vice president of product marketing and development for the Microrim Corporation and as chief of database technologies for Wall Data, Inc. He is the father of the semantic object data model. David’s consulting clients have included IBM, Microsoft, and Computer Sciences Corporations, as well as numerous smaller companies. Recently, David has focused on using information systems for teaching collaboration and teamwork.

His text Database Processing was first published in 1977 and is now in its 13th edition. He has authored and coauthored many other textbooks, including Database Concepts, 7th ed. (2015), Using MIS, 8th ed. (2016), SharePoint for Students (2012), Office 365 in Business (2012), and Processes, Systems, and Information: An Introduction to MIS, 2nd ed. (2015).

Randall J. Boyle received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Florida State University in 2003. He also has a master’s degree in Public Administration and a B.S. in Finance. He has received university teaching awards at Longwood University, the University of Utah, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has taught a wide variety of classes including Introduction to MIS, Cyber Security, Networking & Servers, System Analysis and Design, Telecommunications, Advanced Cyber Security, Decision Support Systems, and Web Servers.

His research areas include deception detection in computer-mediated environments, secure information systems, the effects of IT on cognitive biases, the effects of IT on knowledge workers, and e-commerce. He has published in several academic journals and has authored several textbooks, including Corporate Computer and Network Security, 4th ed., Applied Information Security, 2nd ed., and Applied Networking Labs, 2nd ed.

Randy lives in Virginia with his wife and three young children. He currently enjoys T-ball, swimming, and running.

This book has too many problems! What gives?

I have tried to use this book, in the Kindle app, on a tablet and a computer. It just plain "SUCKS!!!" It freezes, and does not respond. It lags. The pages take almost a minute to show. For the amount of money it takes to just RENT this book, It just doesn't make sense that there are any problems. The laptop is running a CORE i7 processor, with 8 gigs of RAM and an SSD for storage. The tablet is an iPad3.

Book arrived in rough used shape at best. Cover had huge creases and several pages were dog eared, dirty and showed signs of neglect. Not at all as advertised, not worth the money!

Fresh Approach

Fresh approach to a subject which has been written about many times. The book is aligned well-short, sharp, to the point with some subtlety in tips on executing a sound negotiating strategy. The inter relationship of a negotiating position with an assessment and analysis of self is novel which gives the book some stature and business credibility. A good read for the less experienced with sound tips and strategies and a sharp reminder for the seasoned negotiator-there are plenty of new tricks and ideas out there. Read ithe book and reduce the likelihood of being out negotiated.

This book is the opposite of a typical business book. It is short, to the point, not overly complicated. It is refreshing! It's for business readers, but for the rest of us too. In short, the book provides a filter with which to interpret interactions, conversations, and challenges and suggested approaches for how to generate mutual value versus defining right from wrong. If everyone read and digested this book, we'd all be able to see each other's point of view a little more clearly and debate and negotiate toward agreements that made us all happier.

Read this once, but planning on re-reading it a couple of times. Quick, easy read - but really clear-cut and challenging. Made me take a step back and assess my approach to negotiation (why and how) and reminded me why every detail matters. Also, the dash of British humor is great.

Get wrapping with the easy and fun book, DIY WRAP BRACELETS!

Wrap bracelets can be a lovely expression of your personal style.
Why buy a pre-made bracelet, at prices ranging up to $300.00, when you can learn how to make them yourself?

The bracelets (along with necklaces, earrings, and rings to match, at times) from the comprehensive book, DIY WRAP BRACELETS, by Keiko Sakamoto, will encourage your imagination and guide you on your journey as you learn to create your own wrap bracelet.

No matter what your style, Keiko Sakamoto has you covered. You will find twenty five different styles of wraps in this wonderfully comprehensive book.
They range from the very simple to more complex.
The author employs a number of materials to vary the creations she offers. In DIY WRAP BRACELETS, you will find not only leather cord bracelets, but designs employing rhinestone chain with chiffon, braided linen cord, woven fabric, and more.
She explains how to make a bracelet which can also be worn as a necklace, and gives directions for pretty earrings as well.

Love it, very inspiring

I just got this book today and looked through it and am eager to start making bracelets. The pictures are well done and clear, the projects contain materials list and easy to follow diagrams, and the color combinations and styles are inspiring. It doesn't just cover bracelets but also suggest adaptations for some of the designs into necklaces and earrings. There's even a project for a bracelet with a brooch where the brooch can be worn standalone. I love that the projects use a nice mix of different materials and beads. It is a good jump start for beginners and still suitable for intermediate makers.

Blind Melon is my favorite band, and this book tells the whole story. From the beginning to the tragic end of Shannon Hoon's life. The interviews are interesting & the history of the band is complete. A great read for anyone who loves music.

From the mouths of those that were there

I opened this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. It truly does tell the story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon, and tells it in the best possibly way; from the mouths of the people that lived it. The story is told in a series of quotes from band members, record company people, family and friends obtained through interviews by the author. And in the case of Hoon, the quotes were taken from published interviews from the 90's. There could no be no purer way for this story to be told. The interviewees were candid and open; they seemed to hold nothing back. Their words and stories spoke so clearly of those times and what Shannon Hoon meant to them that I truly felt that I got to know him and his tendencies through this book. I felt as if I truly had spent those hours not reading a book, but spending time with these people and their friend Shannon. Which made for emotional results even though I knew the end to this story. When the fateful end of Shannon Hoon's life came in this book I immediately felt the loss of him. My heart broke, and I missed him. Just from reading a book 13 and a half years after the event. I do not have the book in front of me as I review it, but someone in there said something along the lines of "everyone who met him thought Shannon was their best friend" and it was easy to see that.

As Shannon Hoon had the most powerful personality of the subjects in the book, and people seemed to speak most about their relationship with him, it is easy to focus on him. But through the honesty of Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn, Brad Smith, and Glen Graham you felt closer to them as well. They give valuable details of life in the band Blind Melon, everything from stories from the road to recollections of recording and some song meanings. A casual rock and roll fan will see from this book that Blind Melon was a band, and not just Shannon Hoon.

Your heart really goes out to the people that were close to Shannon Hoon. People whose lives were touched very deeply for knowing him, and who had to deal with the pain of losing him. I extend gratitude to those willing to speak about those times for this project, and credit to the author for the Shannon Hoon quotes he chose to give the singer's perspective of that time in his life with his band. Strongest recommendation for anyone that is a fan of 90's music, and this is a flat out must read for any Blind Melon fan.
