About the Author
Sass Brown is the Assistant Dean of the School of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and the former Resident Director of its study abroad program in Florence, Italy. As a designer, researcher, writer, journalist and blogger, her area of expertise is eco fashion in all of its various expressions. She is the New York editor for Coco Eco Magazine and writes for a range of other magazines and websites. Her first book, Eco Fashion, was published by Laurence King in 2010.

Not very useful to readers/sewists

Refashioned follows a formula I have seen in a few other books of this type. The editor asks a large number of designers to submit their professional photos and sales literature. This is then assembled into an anthology where several pages are devoted to the business of each designer, in this book in alphabetical order. Although this is a great marketing opportunity for the designers, it's not very useful to readers who want to create their own clothes or accessories from recycled materials. I certainly don't want a book of cute little craftsy projects, but this book contains no instructions, general how-to, patterns, or diagrams of any kind. The photos are small. And many of the wearable art garments photographed focus on the "art" part, not the "wearable" part. Or even on the eco-aware part: You don't need to obviously cut up numerous viable shirts to make one dress, or use numerous pairs of jeans to make one ridiculously bulky skirt. For some designers, eco-awareness seems to just be a currently trendy label to attach to extreme fashions. There are a few photos of the kind of recycling where you could buy a commercial pattern for a very simple tunic, dress (in some cases this is oversized/very loose) or coat and use two to four different fabrics when making it up to create a color block or patchwork effect. But if you can sew, you've probably thought of that already.

Too Extreme

I got nothing from this book. I was so disapointed. It is a fashion coffee table book. To be fair, the title does say, "Cutting-Edge Clothing..." The clothes in this book exactly that and are not wearable. If you did want to make something from this book, you had better know how to sew. There are no specific instructions on how to create a single look in the book. If you just want to look/learn about how some high-end fashion designers are trying to be more environmentally conscious, maybe you would enjoy parts of this book. I am a book lover and a sewer of average ability. This book was a disappointment.

Creativity celebrated!

Sass Brown has taken an environmentally-conscious theme and found many fashion designers who celebrate it and even take it over the edge. Her concise descriptions of each designer's work are incisive, and the photographs are beautiful. I recommend it to anyone who sees clothing and accessories as more than just materials to cover the body, but as a true art form.
