This first book by the author of Solitude has been long out of print. Examining the basic assumptions of his profession, psychotherapist Storr argues that the essential goal of man is self-realization, the drive toward maturity that is inextricably linked with "the development of his relationship with others," and that the purpose of psychotherapy is to further that development in collaboration with the therapist. Although his own training is Jungian, Storr is remarkably candid in conceding that Freudian and Kleinian analysts achieve roughly the same degree of success. But too much of the book is given over to unstartling pronouncements, such as his proclamation that immature parents generally raise immature children, or to dry reiteration of post-Freudian commonplaces. Moreover, Storr's analysis of homosexuality as "a failure of maturation" has long since been superseded by other views. The same might be said of some of his observations about the etiology of schizophrenia. Finally, although the introductory chapters are lucid and crisp, the bulk of the book is written in an academic style that wears out its welcome in a few pages.

Another excellent title from Dr Anthony Storr, deep insights into the origins of personality disorders & the impact these personalities have on significant relationships. Recommended reading for all who are seeking a greater level of understanding into people who compulsively inflict pain & suffering on those who are significant to them. All Anthony Storr's books offer great depth & increased awareness for those of us who seek self knowledge & clarity in human relationships.

A brilliant synthesis of Jung and psychoanalytic object relations theory.

This is a very clearly written book. Its also one of the most coherent integrations of Jungian and psychoanalytic ideas ever written. I recently ordered another copy of this book as my copy is becoming a bit worn. Worn it may be but the content is far from being worn. Anthony Storr was a brilliant writer and makes the deepest insights about the workings of unconscious processes readily available to anyone who can read English. A brilliant synthesis of Jungian and psychoanalytic object relations theory.

information in book is great...ebook has many errors though

The information contained in this book is great and is essential knowledge for taking care of the cardiac patient. However, the ebook has many many errors. Regularly there are letters missing from words or words broken into two part or two words combined into one (examples--- 'H is' instead of 'His'; '(-adrenergic' instead of 'α-adrenergic' or even 'alpha-adrenergic'; 'epolarization' instead of 'repolarization'; 'y' instead of 'by'). This happens very often and this is just in the first chapter. It's possible that it could lead to misrepresentation of information or even be totally incorrect information. For instance, α and β receptors have different effects when activated. It is often impossible to ascertain which receptor is being discussed, without having prior knowledge of their effects when activated.
Please issue an update to the ebook to correct the many errors in the text.

Fascinating and disturbing

An interesting account of the rise of ISIS. The author has seen the damage and talked to the survivors. But it's hard to decide whether there isn't something of a conspiracy theory at work here. He sees secular Baathists as important in constructing ISIS. It's a grab for power and the religious fanaticism is only the means. Maybe -- but I'm skeptical.

He lives with his wife and three sons in Santa Cruz, Calif., when he's not touring his one-man show, The Stupid History of the Human Race.

Boring....

This book was quite boring to read. The punchlines are lame, much like the ones found on Readers Digest. Much verbiage is written in an infantile way such as tummy for stomach etc etc. Many narratives were mundane. Although one has to praise the author fur such a large collection, one has to say that if you read one, you read them all.
