Robert Hugh Benson (18 November 1871 – 19 October 1914) was an English Anglican priest who joined the Roman Catholic Church (1903) in which he was reordained priest in 1904. He was lauded in his own day as one of the leading figures in English literature, having written the notable book Lord of The World.

If you like be-bop, funky modern writing - this book is ...

If you like be-bop, funky modern writing - this book is not for you. If, however, you respond to elegant, educated and grammatically inoffensive writing, where the subject-matter is not an opportunity for the author to emote, you will love this book. This is the first book I have read by RH Benson and I have now ordered quite a few other books. His writing is exquisite, but the pace of the story is its strength - I could not put the book down.

This is an historical novel, and relates events that occurred during the Elizabethan era, when the Reformation took hold. The fictional story manages to convey to the reader the harsh realities of that era and the religious conflicts that prevailed. The author, however, addresses the different religious views with a deep understanding and tolerance of the philosophical foundations of the relevant religions.

The historical accuracy is unquestionable - quite a relief when faced with the plethora of propaganda supportive of the Tudor regime. In this regard, I must digress to comment upon the benefits that the modern reader enjoys by the internet. Prior to such providers as Amazon, authors such as RH Benson, and histories that differed from those that supported the vested interests of the powerful, would simply not have been published, or would have been difficult to obtain. The ability to obtain books such as this, at a cheap price and without difficulty, means that information is disseminated throughout the world that has been previously passed down through word-of-mouth, or has been silent.

I encourage any readers who are enthusiastic about the historical accuracy of the story, to verify, by independent research, features and descriptions of characters and events in the story.

This book is a good story, well-written, and with layers which are there if you choose to explore them. I would venture to say that it is not a book for Dan Brown fans. However, if you respond to the Edwardian style of writing, and like your historical portrayals to be historically correct, then you will like this book.

How little the world has changed

This is an intriguing book. It begins rather slowly but moves along quite nicely once one is accustomed to the pace. The characters are rather clearly cut, including both virtues and vices. Although written over a hundred years ago at the time of the Elizabethan persecution of "papists", it rings true even today where it is considered "with it" to denounce the Catholic Church. A good read.

I agree with Lillian Vernon: This is a "must-read for women of all ages, with positive and original ideas, giving a refreshing and personal perspective." I also think it is a must-read for men...at least those in management positions who (perhaps motivated by self-interest, if by nothing else) want to develop "wildly successful" people of both genders. Most of us have been "stone-walled" at some point in our careers. Or perhaps we have on occasion felt that we have hit a "brick wall." Encountering a "glass ceiling" is far worse because we can see through the glass to what lies beyond...to what we are denied. I am reminded of Tantalus who, according to Greek mythology, offended the gods. His punishment was to remain in Hades for eternity, thirsty and hungry, placed up to his neck in water he could not drink beneath clusters of fruit he could not eat: So near and yet so far.
It is Pamela Boucher Gilberd's assertion that "Women's economic creativity is one of the best-kept secrets in business today....It's time to acknowledge the truth -- that working women have the tools to create wild success for themselves and others and that we use those tools every day." ASAP, however, every "glass ceiling" must be permanently eliminated if there is to be equal opportunity to achieve "wild success." Intangible assets are much more valuable than are tangible assets. I refer specifically to the talent (albeit under-utilized) and the experience (albeit under-appreciated) of those within any organization. The remarkable women whom Gilberd interviewed are to be commended for what they accomplished, especially given the obstacles they had to overcome. They are also to be commended for sharing so generously what they have learned. In this instance, they are following the Eleventh Commandment: Give Back to Keep the Cycle of Success Going. Those who read this book will be well-prepared to overcome all manner of obstacles at work to achieve their own "wild success"...and to help others to do so also.

This book is highly recommended. It asks questions that you need to be able to answer for youself in order for you to be successful. It also gives a great source of references at the back of the book for other female organizations to help support you in your path to succeed.

Highly Recomended

The pictures are excellent, and so is the production quality of this book. I would highly recommend this to anyone, especially a beginning student, or a teacher. I've seen a lot of people who are mystified, with regard to where they should hit an enemy in a combative situation/conflict. This book allows the uninformed to actually see where to strike, and how to strike. Some of the applications (how to strike) are a bit ill-advised, though. You wouldn't want to try to kick someone in the elbow of the arm you are holding, simply because doing so would leave you wide open for either a high or low attack. The book is very easy to read and is quite descriptive. It gives you a lot of ideas on how to incapacitate your opponent without killing them. If you are attacked by an aggressor, including that bully outside the bar/club, I would advise that you strike the targets detailed in this book. No police officer or court of law will expect you to take into consideration your attacker's intent or abilities, as doing so would put your own life at risk, something you are not required to do. So, that being said, these targets aren't for the fight you chose not to walk away from, as that kind of find is the one you will also be held responsible for.

Good title, but it could use some help

This book was informative, demonstrating seven major targets to the human body. There is an overview of the importance of these target areas ( cervical vertebrae, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet ) from an anatomical perspective. It follows the philosophy of attacking an opponent's weapons before he can use them. Makes perfect sense. Following the anatomical section, there are sections concerning how to disable the various target areas ( at least 3 techniques each ) from a variety of positions. The book is simple but effective. The only problem I have with it is the illustrations. I'm sure the publisher saved money by using these, but at times they are somewhat confusing owing to their crude nature. Interesting and to the point, worth it's small price.

This book must compliment some type of fighting system

I would first like to get it clear to everybody that this is NOT a "teach yourself self-defense in 24 hours" book. I strongly recommend that you accompany this book with some type of fighting system. I recommend SCARS, Special Combat Aggressive-Reactionary Systems. Go check out their website....
This book teaches you about certain striking points on a human body that, if you were to correctly strike your opponent on any such striking points, you can easily damage, if not break, those joints of your opponent that are connected to these striking points. I am fairly acquainted with a good deal of the book's mentioned striking points.
The book also reveals applicable techniques that teaches you how to use these striking points to your advantage in the event you are in a fight. For instance, the ankle is a good striking point on your opponent's body. A strong side kick to the ankle is an excellent technique to use if you want to break your opponent's ankle.
Here is one technique that I especially love. It involves killing someone within a few seconds using just your bare hands. This technique is particularly efficient is your opponent sports a ponytail. Buy this book if you want to learn the technique I am referring to.
