Naipaul, and Derek Walcott have successfully appropriated Classics and adapted it to the cultural context of the Caribbean, creating a distinctive, regional tradition.

(Matt 13:10, 13) Moreover, in union with the divine, Our Saviour was able to reveal sacred knowledge that had never been previously presented in the entire history of mankind: "I will explain mysteries hidden since the creation of the world" (Matt 13:35). This sacred and revealed knowledge has been termed "Christ-mysteries" or "mysteries of the Son." After his glorious resurrection and ascension, Christ-Jesus institutionalized his two-fold mystery-teachings through St. Peter and St. John (the Evangelist, not the apostle). Through St. Peter, Our Saviour instituted a universal, Christian religion and theology to preserve, promote and convey the more basic and simplified mystery-teachings that are intended for the general public. Through St. John, Christ-Jesus instituted a universal, Christian philosophy and theosophy to preserve, promote and convey the more comprehensive and complex mystery-teachings that are intended for the more advanced disciples (Christian initiates). About the Author
Having been born in 1950, Ron MacFarlane’s Presbyterian family background was enormously deepened and expanded in his formative teenage years by the influx of exotic Eastern mysticism into Western society during the “Psychedelic Sixties.” But it was during his twenty-first year that several profound spiritual experiences would shape his relationship with Jesus Christ for the rest of his life. During that time, he experienced a blinding encounter with the Risen Saviour (similar to St. Paul) as well as the transcendent experience of “Christ-consciousness” on the other side of the threshold. Moreover, a supersensory calling from Christian Rosenkreutz and a later physical encounter with a mysterious emissary would eventually direct Ron’s attention to Rudolf Steiner and to anthroposophy. Consequently, Ron has been a dedicated Rosicrucian student and a strong supporter of anthroposophy for over thirty-five years. This deep and abiding interest in esoteric Christianity has been harmoniously complemented since 2006 by an equally deep devotion to the Church of St. Peter. This conversion to the Catholic Faith was the result of an inner directive from Our Saviour during the previous Christmas season. Ron is happily retired from a professional career as a high school art teacher and currently lives in Mission BC, Canada, with his loving wife Anne Marie, close to their four adult daughters and three grandchildren.

A man of peace in a world of conflict

"The Ends of the Circle" is book two (of seven) in "The Pelbar Cycle." In it, we are introduced to Stel Dahmen (later changed to "Stel Westrun"), who will be one of the main characters in most of the rest of the books. Newly married to a woman he loves, but who comes from a rigidly autocratic family that cannot abide what they see as his lack of proper respect, he ends up fleeing the walled city of his birth. Travelling across an America drastically changed in the thousand years since "The Time of Fire," Stel's resourcefulness and humble peacefulness are tested again and again, until eventually he is reunited with his wife Ahroe, and the son he didn't know he had, in the midst of a battle.
Stel Westrun/Dahmen is one of the most truly gentle characters you are ever likely to encounter in any post-apocalyptic fiction; he seems to spend his entire life trying to defuse the violence and intolerance of those around him; an engineer, poet, and flute-player, he is considered frivolous by most, but ends up sowing the seeds of vast change in the reunification of the tribes of what was once America.
"The Ends of the Circle" just misses getting a five star rating because it is short and a little shallow; later volumes in the series get better, and I would give five stars to "The Pelbar Cycle" as a whole, as I have re-read and enjoyed them all many times.

A hauntingly real world

The four stars here are an average of 5, for worldbuilding, and 3, for awkward writing style.

I read Williams' Pelbar cycle when the books first came out in the 70s or 80s. I've re-read them a few times in the intervening years, and every time I experience the same curious mix of enthusiasm and irritation.

The most compelling SF/F books are those in which the world itself is a character, in which the author's created universe has the same power as one of the actors. In my heart, for instance, I believe that McCaffery's Pern truly exists *somewhere*; as a reader, you want to climb over the next hill to see what's there.

Williams envisioned what the U.S. would be like a thousand years after a nuclear war, as civilization returns, technology is re-discovered, and the various lone communities begin to reconnect. The central figures are from Pelbarigan, a walled city on the Missisippi, somewhere south of where St. Louis is today. In addition to flipping back to the map to place the characters as they travel around the country, you -- or at least I -- spend some energy trying to figure out how each language or society evolved. That's the fun part.

Good worldbuilding can overcome a lot of weakness in storytelling, and in the Pelbar series it achieves it. Unfortunately, it needs to. What isn't accomplished nearly as well is the wordsmithing. Williams throws sentences at the page as though they're shovelfuls of words. The writing is stilted, annoyingly so, though I've never figured out exactly what he did wrong. Because the characters do come to life, and you do care what happens to them. There are few real surprises in the saga of Stel and his wife Ahroe, and in some ways they are verbal stick figures, but Stel, in particular, manages to be a real person with honor and wit. If this were a movie, I'd say that a re-make with a good director could make it top-notch.

The earlier books work well as standalone stories; in fact, I read The Ends of the Circle and a few following novels before I got to the Breaking of Northwall, and it never bothered me that I didn't know the details of Jestak's journey. (He'd gone east to explore; Stel and Ahroe head west, so they never cross paths.) The Ends of the Circle is probably the best of the lot, though A Dome in the Forest is a close follow-up.

If you have a weakness for alternate history SF/F stories or post-apocalyptic tales, it's worth the time to read this one. It isn't perfect, but the worldbuilding excellence balances out a lot of other weaknesses.

A handbook for living with women

The author died shortly after completion of this cycle from aortic aneuryism rupture. This is the only work of fiction we have from this gifted author. It is utterly worth the read. His grasp of humanity is broad and deep. This is not hard science fiction. It is a story set in the future illustrating the timeless themes of the dynamics between men and women and individuals and society.

A scholarly, well-written biography of France's great heroine, Beyond the Myth is thorough, interesting, and full of detail about this remarkable woman and the time in which she lived. In addition to an historical introduction, Brooks also discusses various interpretations of Joan's visions, and then makes her own thoughtful analysis. The book also contains a comprehensive, annotated bibliography. The black-and-white illustrations have been carefully selected and are aptly placed within the text; there are also two excellent maps. Brooks' book is a good complement to Williams' classic Joan of Arc (American Heritage, 1963; o.p.) which, while more condensed in its text, effectively relates Joan's story and has superb full-color illustrations. A more recent study, Banfield's Joan of Arc (Chelsea, 1985; o.p.), is skimpy in detail and contains many factual errors; its numerous illustrations are, for the most part, poorly selected and explained. Goodwin's Where the Towers Pierce the Sky (Four Winds, 1989), a recent time-travel fantasy, treats Joan in the simplistic manner typical of popular fiction. In contrast, Brooks writes for serious readers, and her book, although challenging, is richly rewarding. It will certainly become the definitive Joan of Arc biography for young adults. --Ann W. Brooks's carefully rendered and moving history focuses on the single year in which Joan led the army of Prince Charles to victory and then fell prey to the jealousy, court intrigue, and superstition that brought about her death. We Loved It

This was a read aloud book with my 8 and 10 year old children. I chose to read this book because we all loved Ms. Brooks's biography of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Before reading the book we thought of Joan as just a peasant girl that lead an army. After reading the book, we know Joan was so much more. She was intelligent, confident, valorous, and brave. Her life was difficult and filled with challenges that tested her beliefs and patriotism. We appreciate knowing the motivations behind her actions, and her single aim of restoring King Charles to the throne of France. We all would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about Joan and her life.

Getting beyond the myths about Joan of Arc

In "Beyond the Myth: The Story of Joan of Arc," Polly Schoyer Brooks provides a biography for young adults that makes a point of separating historical facts from popular legends. One of the main strengths of the volume is how Brooks establishes the situation in 15th-century France which involved a king who suffered fits of madness and his weakling son and then tells the story of a peasant girl from the countryside who accomplished what appeared to be miracles in rallying the French to her banner. The result is a book about Joan of Arc that captures her humanity as well as her heroism.
Brooks neatly divides the story of Joan in half, with the first six chapters starting with Joan's life in the village of Domremy and ending with the crowing of Charles the Dauphin as King of France, and the last six depicting Joan's fall from glory, trial, and execution. Brooks emphasizes that the situations that brought about her martyrdom were beyond Joan's control and details the political calculations that ended up putting her in the hands of the English. However, as Brooks emphasizes, though the English burned Joan's body to ashes they could not wipe out the memory of her deeds from the French people. I appreciate that Brooks makes it clear to her readers how the effort's to restore Joan's name and honor after the English left France were just as politically motivated as the trial that condemned her.
This young adult biography is illustrated with historic prints and paintings, including a sketch by a clerk of his idea of Joan drawn in the margin of his report, as well as contemporary photographs of historic sites, such as Joan's stone-and-rubble house in Domremy and the statue on the post were she was burned at the stake in the marketplace at Rouen. Brooks has also written similar biographies of Eleanor of Acquitaine and Cleopatra. However, as Brooks notes, although more books about Joan have been inspired than any other women in history, she remains an enigma. In "Beyond the Myth," Brooks tries to answer the key questions concerning Joan's life and to restore her humanity, which in the final analysis, Brooks sees as being her greatest virtue. For students who are ready to get beyond your basic juvenile biographies of Joan of Arc, this is a thoughtful volume to which to turn next.
