Justice and Remembrance: Introducing the Spirituality of Imam Ali, by Reza Shah-Kazemi

Ali b. Abi Talib--son-in-law and cousin of the prophet Muhammad, first Shi'i imam and fourth caliph--is a monumental figure within the Islamic tradition. This book is the first serious engagement in English with the intellectual principles underpinning his teachings. The book focuses particularly on the spiritual and ethical content of his teachings and evaluates Ali's *sacred conception of justice,* while exploring the intimate connections between Ali's teachings and later Sufi doctrines.

Justice and Remembrance: Introducting the Spirituality of Imam 'Ali
By Mysterium Ineffable
"Justice and Remembrance" is a tripartite study of the spiritual ethos of Imam 'Ali ibn Abu Talib, who represents the elaboration par excellence of the meanings contained in the Qur'an and enshrined in its application in the precedent set by its Messenger. This task is one of tremendous importance for appropriating the roots of religion and understanding the essential doctrines that constitute Islam as such, apart from an Islam which has pinned to it long complicated histories of sectarian and political interests which is of little concern for those serious seekers of Truth.

The Imam says: 'People are of three types: a lordly knower ('alim rabbani); one who seeks knowledge (muta'allim) for the sake of deliverance; and the common folk (hamaj ra'a) following just anyone, swaying with every current, not desiring to be illuminated by the light of knowledge, nor seeking refuge from any strong support'. One could see the three dimensions of Islam as corresponding to these three categories of people; Ihsan (spiritual virtue) being the way of the lordly knower, Iman (faith) being the way of the seeker, and Islam (submission) the way of the common folk.

The main text under consideration is the Nahj al-Balagha (the Peak of Eloquence), a collection of sermons and doctrinal exposition attributed to Imam 'Ali compiled by Sayyed al-Radi. It is possibly the most important work of classic Arabic literature (the Qur'an, or any Sacred Book, cannot be considered literature) and has been much praised for its unmatched rhetorical style, parables and the eloquence of its expression. The text does have its particularities, but its universal currents are pronounced more strongly, even in the more political sermons. The author Reza Shah-Kazemi focuses his study of the Imam's spiritual ethos on that unmistakable universalism which distinguishes the Imam from those tendencies which reduce Islam to its legal tradition or to sentimental theology. Those particulars have their respective levels of importance, but only in relation to the universal, for Truth is One and simplicity is closer to unity than complexity.

The work is divided into three sections: an introduction to the spiritual ethos of the Imam, a detailed study of the Imam's conception of justice ('adl) as the foundational virtue of Man, and the Imam's teaching concerning the remembrance of God (dhikru 'Llah). Words fall short of describing the profundity of Kazemi's erudition. One is immediately reminded of that intellectual tenor which characterizes those champions of the Sophia Perennis, but it is clear that Kazemi's concern is that universal Truth which is to be gleamed through the prism of the Islamic tradition and not mere speculation on universal principles divorced from their traces in Manifestation. In Imam 'Ali we find the crystallization of this universal Truth which compliments in its inwardness and supra-formal orientation that same Truth found in the Qur'an and its Prophet in its more outward and formal manner. Justice and Remembrance reflect the two functions of the Imam, the former found in his arresting chivalry on the battlefield and his impenetrable integrity in the office of Caliph, and the later in his majestic sanctity and his function of initiating the esoteric tradition within Islam.

The chief aim of this study is clearly to encourage us, through the Ihsani, sapiential, or intellect-ual perspective, to become that "polished mirror" before the Light that is God by assisting us in comprehending the metaphysical infrastructure of the relationship between God and Man and by drawing our attention to the two poles of religious practice: concentration on the Absolute (the remembrance of God) and conformity to the Absolute in the human order (Virtue, or Justice).

In regard to the former Imam 'Ali has said: 'Do not remember God absent mindedly (sahiyan), nor forget Him in distraction; rather, remember Him with perfect remembrance (dhikran kamilan), a remembrance in which your heart and tongue are in harmony, and what you conceal conforms to what you reveal. But you will not remember Him according to the true reality of the remembrance (haqiqat al-dhikr) until you forget your own soul in your remembrance'. In regard to the later Imam 'Ali has written to one of his governors: 'Infuse your heart with mercy for the subjects, love for them and kindness towards them. Be not like a ravenous beast of prey above them, seeking to devour them. For they are of two types: either your brother in religion or your like in creation, Mistakes slip from them, defects emerge from them, deliberately or accidentally. So bestow upon them your forgiveness and pardon, just as you would have God bestow upon you His forgiveness and pardon; for you are above them, and the one who has authority over you is above you, and God is above him who appointed you ... and through them He tests you', and 'Let your most beloved treasure be the treasure of virtuous acts. Dominate your inclinations, and exercise self-restraint in the face of that which is unlawful for you--for indeed self-restraint engenders within the soul a proper balance as regards what it likes and what it dislikes.'

One could understand the scope of this work by seeing it as an extensive introduction to the Ihsani tradition or quintessential Islam through the sermons and maxims of Imam 'Ali. Kazemi shows us how the Imam's use of paradoxical pronouncement on the ultimate nature of the Real and our relationship with this Real on all the various levels of the hierarchy that is Man activates the Intellect ('aql)--referred to by the Imam as a "buried treasure", much like the hadith qudsi where God refers to Himself as a "hidden treasure" Who "longed to be known"--and ushers us towards the realization of Tawhid in its highest sense. This Ihsani tradition is the understanding and appropriation of Revelation through the Intellect, which is its microcosmic compliment, and includes the various sacred sciences which return us from our natural heedlessness and baseness to our supra-natural sanctity and perfection. As the Imam says, 'The prophet of a man is the interpreter of his intellect (rasul al-rajul tarjuman `aqlihi)', and 'He attains deliverance whose intellect dominates his caprice'.

If one is seeking to understand the Real through Its self-disclosure in that rich tradition which is Islam I can think of no better place to start than a patient and contemplative study of this most precious work. It is as if the warrior sage himself has been resurrected in the humble writings and reflections of Reza Shah-Kazemi; something the author himself would undoubtedly deny, but which for this reader cannot but be the case. This is also a work which pushes the reader beyond its covers, as books can only be supports for spiritual practice and can never take their place. Theoretical or conceptual understanding is naught in the light of that universal Truth which the Imam defines thus: 'Al-Haqiqa (unconditioned Truth) is the unveiling of the splendors of Majesty, without any allusion ... the effacement of that which is erroneously imagined (al-mawhum), together with the clarity of that which is truly known (al-ma'lum) ... the attraction of the absolute unicity of the quality of Tawhid ... a light dawning from the morn of eternity, its traces shimmering on the temples of Tawhid'.

Justice and Rembrance
By Joyce A. Slaughter
Although this book is not an easy read it is well worth the effort. It explains the Shia concept of justice ( putting everything in its proper place) by reviewing a letter written by Imam Ali to his deputy in Egypt.
This section should be required reading for everyone in a leadership position.
I have yet to read the section on Remebrance( calling God to mind) but I am sure it will be equally uplifting.

Todo Sobre Aplicaciones Para Sharepoint, Office y Office 365 (Spanish Edition), by Gustavo Velez, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Fabian Imaz, Alber

Experiencing Cities (2nd Edition), by Mark Hutter

For undergraduate and graduate courses in urban sociology.

A  social psychological perspective informed by political economy encourages sociological understanding of the city and suburb in the past and in the contemporary world.

Experiencing Cities is an introduction to urban sociology based heavily on microsociology and symbolic interaction theory–emphasizing the way people experience the urban world in their everyday lives, interact with one another, and create meaning from the physical and human environments of their cities.

Walter Carroll, Bridgewater State College

Peter Grahame, Pennsylvania State University- Schuylkill

Mark Hardt, Montana State University-Billings

"The text emphasizes some areas -- such as the city as a work of art -- that other texts ignore.  I have a very favorable overall impression of this material. To my mind, this is the strongest of the urban sociology texts available."

Walter Carroll, Bridgewater State College

“It is accessible, informative, and has good depth. The scope of information covered is considerable, and yet remains comprehensive and organized.”

Mark Hardt, Montana State University, Billings

“My overall impressions are very positive. The synthesis of interactionism and political economy seems the right way to go.”

Peter Grahame, Pennsylvania State University, Schuylkill

“I liked this textbook, the students in the class liked the textbook; in fact, I received a number of totally unsolicited thumbs ups on this book over the course of the semester. It's well-written and well-organized, interesting to read.”

Donna Bird, University of Southern Maine

Best Urban Textbook Currently on the Market
By R. Adams
I teach Urban Sociology and have looked at a number of textbooks. For me, Mark Hutter's book is the best one on the market at the moment. It covers all of the topics one would expect in a textbook and it is well written, for the most part. Although Hutter discusses the main theories in urban sociology, he primarily uses symbolic interactionism to show how people's perceptions of the city are shaped by their social class, race, and gender characteristics and the political economy perspective to illuminate how cities do not just happen, but take shape based on the influence of political, business, and real estate elites. Hutter, for example, discusses how our notions about gender and family shaped the development of shopping in downtown areas and lead to the rise of the suburbs. What sets Hutter's book apart from the rest is that he incorporates a cultural perspective in his analysis of city life. For example, the book has a chapter on the City as Work of Art, where Hutter links impressionist paintings, city life, and the emerging middle class in Paris and the work of Mural artists in Philadelphia to urban redevelopment. There is also a chapter on how skyscrapers reflect the image that corporate interests what to project to the public. Lastly, Hutter looks at connections to others and how urban settings can facilitate or inhibit them, and the consequences of social isolation for people's well-being. Most of the problems that I have with the book revolve around poor editing. There are passages in one paragraph that are repeated in the next one, which suggests that Hutter moved some sentences around for this Second Edition and was not careful about deleting the old material. There are also some mistakes in citations. For example, in discussing George Will's comments on the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the text misspells his last name as Wills multiple times. While minor, these errors detract from the overall quality of Hutter's writing. I
recommended it to anyone teaching a class in Urban Sociology.

My review
By Lordfrieza
Where to begin? "'Begin at the beginning," the King said gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop." (Alice in Wonderland)

Being that I just took Urban Sociology this semester I thought it would be best to go ahead and give my two cents on the text book. "Discovering Cities" isn't a bad text book, but then it isn't the single greatest text book either. It does focus on the basics of Urban Sociology, but there are portions that seems to just skim over. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful professor for the class who seemed to know the material well enough that she was able to provide insight where the book fell short. Still, for a run of the mill text book it's not bad. I would have preferred for it to go deeper into the culture and subcultures of the Urban setting, but then again "we can't always get what we want."

Do I recommend it? Sure if your course is using the book get it, but do I recommend it for a private collection? No, you would be far better off doing research on the Chicago School and going from there.

Good book, great man.
By Kirstin
Loved the book. I took an Urban Sociology class last semester & we used this book because my professor was Mark Hutter, the author. Love him & the book so much that I'm taking him again now. Such a cool guy, he's absolutely passionate about what he does & I think it shows in this book as well. I may be biased because I know the man himself but it's an easier read than most textbooks. It flows well & the tone in which it's written made it feel personal & kept my attention.

The Secrets of Building a Plastic Injection Molding Machine, by Vincent Gingery

Here is a book that brings the art of plastic injection molding to the home shop level. Working with plastics can be a fun and profitable hobby. If you have ever wanted to produce custom made plastic parts or just want to know how it’s done then this book is for you.
Included are complete step by step instructions on how to build a small inexpensive table top injection molding machine capable of injecting up to 1/2 ounce of plastic into a mold. Sources for plastic will be those things normally thrown away. Stuff like plastic milk jugs, soda pop bottles, plastic oil cans etc.
You will learn the basic principles of injection molding and how to design and make your own molds. Begin by making a simple mold to test the machine. Then a mold for a plastic knob that will be used on the machine. Progress to a mold for a small plastic container with a snap lid. It won’t be long before you will be creating new products of your own design. I’ll even show you how to cast replacements for broken or missing plastic parts. Just think of the possibilities. And the finished items you make will turn out so nice and look so professional that it will be hard to believe you made them yourself.
Construction is simple and straight forward, but it will require basic metal working knowledge and access to a metal lathe and a drill press along with other hand and power tools associated with metal working and machine work in general.

A practical and good basic book
By T. Berardi
Gingery books are always good do it your self books. Of course you needs tools as you would to build any machine. Small injection molding machines go for about $1000. To build one you will have to buy some stuff like the heating cartridges and steel for the parts. Half the fun of a Gingery book is actually building the machines. So for a $100 in supplies and a day to a week making and assembling the parts you will have a working machine. Also Gingery books are easy to read and understand.

A fun project...but cheaper just buying a small IM machine!
By William Bickford
A quick read and definitely enjoyable in knowing how "possible" it is to make your own 1/2 oz. injection molding machine. Only major problem... You need a few tools; probably a bandsaw, welding equipment, a good drill press and most likely a lathe. But then again, if you want to make some molds for the IM machine you probably already have the tools I listed! The point is, it's a good learning project, but you're better off buying your own small IM machine for a few hundred bucks...

For the Enivornmentalist Handyman
By A Customer
at 120+ pages, Secrets of building a plastic injection molding machine, is a pretty quick read. I haven't gotten around to trying to build such a device yet, cause honestly I've never built anything before..
a few words though. The deivce once built works with strips of plastics you've collected from old recyclables around the house.. soda bottles, etc.. which is pretty cool.
the machine itself however consists of about 6 pages, of which 80 % is screws and bolts and washers.. The back of the books has a very small list of possible suppliers for some of the more unique parts, and it looks like the machine itself will take abour roughly 100 bucks to make, give or take a little.
So if you've already built a few things then by all means this is gonna be a good time for you, to expand what you can do.
if you haven't touched a screw driver lately, you might want to start somewhere else...

Private Vegas, by James Patterson, Maxine Paetro

Las Vegas is a city of contradictions: seedy and glamorous, secretive and wild, Vegas attracts people of all kinds--especially those with a secret to hide, or a life to leave behind. It's the perfect location for Lester Olsen's lucrative business. He gets to treat gorgeous, young women to five-star restaurants, splashy shows, and limo rides--and then he teaches them how to kill.

Private Jack Morgan spends most of his time in Los Angeles, where his top investigation firm has its headquarters. But a hunt for two criminals leads him to the city of sin--and to a murder ring that is more seductively threatening than anything he's witnessed before. PRIVATE VEGAS brings James Patterson's Private series to a sensational new level.

Trivial Trash!
By Michael G.
There are many Patterson books that I have loved and some that I thought were not bad. This one is without a doubt the worst Patterson book I have ever read. It was a piece of slick worded, upper crust malcontents in three stories that were less than weak. I thought the book was 80% filler, 10% substance and 10% blank page. I was so looking forward to reading this book. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I finished it. After about 60% read, the main motivation for me to finish the book was the 20 bucks I put out for it. Waiting for the next volume in the Michael Bennett series. Hopefully by then, the bad taste of this piece of garbage will have worn off.

Vegas??? Really?
By Carolyn
I fail to understand how this book rates all the rave reviews. IMHO, it doesn't deserve even one star. The title itself is misleading. There are brief scenarios set in Vegas at the very beginning and the very end of the book but the rest of the "action" takes place in L.A. Five different and unrelated story lines, none of them very exciting, that are all tied up in a neat little package in the last few chapters. Jack Morgan's ongoing relationship with Justine will continue in the next book in this series. There is absolutely nothing exciting about this book. It is a complete waste of time and money - and makes me wonder if I will ever be interested in reading another in the Private series.

just awful
By Bill
This may be the biggest waste of time I have ever spent with a book. Absolutely no character development. Hopscotching from one silly plot line to another, the author trying to make a case for some kind of thread between them. I get the short chapters, some one or two pages at most as the authors writing style. But I got little else from this read. This was my third in the Private series, and is my last. Shame on you James Patterson for allowing your name to be associated with this book.

Dream on, Amber, by Emma Shevah

My name is Amber Alessandra Leola Kimiko Miyamoto.
I have no idea why my parents gave me all those hideous names but they must have wanted to ruin my life, and you know what? They did an amazing job.

As a half-Japanese, half-Italian girl with a ridiculous name, Amber's not feeling molto bene (very good) about making friends at her new school.

But the hardest thing about being Amber is that a part of her is missing. Her dad. He left when she was little and he isn't coming back. Not for her first day of middle school and not for her little sister's birthday. So Amber will have to dream up a way for the Miyamoto sisters to make it on their own...

"[A] beautifully written story."-The Independent
"One of those books that you simply won't want to put down...five out of five stars!"-The Guardian

Gr 4–6—Eleven-year-old Ambra Alessandra Leola Kimiko Miyamoto (please, just call her Amber) navigates middle school embarrassments, awkward friendships, a first crush, an intimidating bully, and the realities of being a biracial tween in this smart and funny middle grade debut, first published in the UK. Half Italian and half Japanese, Amber has always felt a bit different than her peers in South London. Her loving and free-spirited mum; maternal grandmother, Nonna; and boisterous little sister, Bella, keep Amber on her toes. But she longs to know more about her Japanese ancestry. Unfortunately, Amber's father left the family when she was six, and it's a loss that feels like a "black hole" in her very center. Determined to protect her younger sister from the pain she feels, she begins forging letters from her father to Bella. Things quickly spiral, and what seemed like a white lie intended to help may wind up causing more harm than good. Amber comforts herself and works through her insecurities through her artwork and by creating an imaginary "Dream Dad" with whom she shares her deepest fears. Amber's authentic voice (including snort-worthy hyperbole and preteen melodrama balanced with tender moments of self-reflection) will resonate with kids. Shevah breathes life into this middle schooler, her lively family members, and her classmates and teachers. Amber confronts racial insensitivities (for example, students comment on her "exotic" appearance and ask her to "say something in Japanese") with frankness and realistic annoyance. The conversational first-person narration is enhanced by black-and-white doodles throughout. VERDICT By turns playful and poignant, in both style and substance, this coming-of-age novel will hook readers from the first page to the last.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Review
""[This] novel is a charmer...While its humor and illustrations lend it Wimpy Kid appeal, its emotional depth makes it stand out from the pack. Molto bene!"" - Booklist, starred review

"Shevah tenderly captures the void of growing up without a father yet manages to create a feisty, funny heroine. Crawford-White's whimsical pen-and-ink illustrations line the margins, as if Amber herself has added the doodles. Chapters are numbered in English, Italian, and Japanese, reflecting Amber's multicultural identity, but refreshingly, that identity does not drive the plot. A gutsy girl in a laugh-out-loud book that navigates tough issues with finesse." - Kirkus, starred review

"Amber's effervescent and opinionated narration captivates from the start, making it easy to root for her as she strives to conquer the "beast" of her worries and thrive at home and at school." - Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Funny, poignant...In pages that Helen Crawford-White has ornamented with preteen-style drawings (our heroine is a talented artist), Amber recounts her cockamamie scheme to hearten Bella, how it all goes awry, and how it yet deepens her small family's bonds of love in this wise and accessible read for 9- to 12-year-olds" - The Wall Street Journal

"Emma Shevah's "Dream On, Amber" is narrated in a spunky, endearing voice by Amber Miyamoto...Though "Dream On, Amber" is ripe with opportunities for didacticism, Amber's appealingly oddball voice makes the lessons go down easy. "Dream On, Amber" also does something unusual for a children's book that grapples with race: It does not solve Amber's biracial identity crisis. Though Amber struggles with the questions of her missing father and Japanese identity, the biggest lesson of this book is that sometimes there are no answers." - The New York Times

"An entertaining, largely unsentimental look at a girl who, as best she can, makes peace with both the family members she has around and the ones who sadly aren't...Amber Miyamoto and her younger sister navigate his absence with a little hope and a lot of panache.
" - Shelf Awareness

"Amber makes an approachable and admirable guide through questions of identity encountered by many tween readers...the final product, with its message of love, self-acceptance, and forgiveness (with an inviting layout of big print sprinkled with lots of margin art) is like one of those cakes with beets snuck in: sweet, tasty, and surprisingly nourishing" - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Amber tackles some tough questions and issues that middle graders face, and she does it with Judy Blume-esque humor, with a touch of Dork Diaries/Diary of a Wimpy Kid slapstick...I loved this book and how it uses humor to take the sting out stressful situations facing kids these days." - Mom Read It

"DREAM ON, AMBER is a strong example of contemporary realistic fiction. It addresses modern topics, such as fitting in, bullying and growing up, that many readers will be able to relate to. Amber is a unique and relatable voice for what it means to have a multicultural background. The novel also provides insight into single parent households and the impact this may have on the children in the family. " - KidsReads

A Wonderful Voice; an Overlooked Gem
By Pop Bop
There are lots of books out there that are supposed to read and feel like the first person narratives of 11/12 year old girls contemplating their step up into middle school. Some are heavily plotted or in some way fantastical, and some focus on the slightly exaggerated problems of everyday life. The tone can be wistful, or snarky, or angsty, or precocious or played mostly for laughs. The "problems" they address can be over-the-top, gritty in an after-school special sort of way, humorous, or romantic and boy-centric.

This book is a bit more emotionally grounded than that, and is one of the few books I've read that scores consistently high marks for the characters that have been created, authenticity, plotting, the honesty of the problems addressed, deadpan humor, and, for want of a better word, wholesome decency. Each character is reasonably complex; each has a reasonable balance of good and bad traits, and each is revealed, at some level, to be basically sound. The result is that the book feels earnest and real, addresses common problems and issues with honesty, and somehow comes out on top with a feel good resolution that doesn't at all seem phony.

Our heroine Amber isn't perfect, but she's as good as she needs to be and better than most. Her Mom, grandmother and sister feel like real family members. The adults in her life are adults, with all of the pros and cons that go with that. Amber's sister, Bella, is a classic annoying little sister, but she has surprising depth and is allowed to be more than a cliche. The affection that binds Amber's family seems real. And this is balanced by the sadness that weighs down everyone as a consequence of Amber's father's absence. The author has taken a real chance - the family was simply abandoned by the father, and Amber's yearning to have a Dad or at least to know why her Dad left is heartbreaking. But of course this is the central event that gives power, energy and meaning to everything else that happens in the book.

The author has a delicate touch and pulls off the whole exercise without ever drifting into the maudlin or precious. As you might expect, Amber often narrates with a wisdom and eye for detail that's way above what you'd expect from an eleven year old, but I'm happy to suspend disbelief on that point in order to allow the author to slip in some sly, edgy, deadpan or vinegary comments, through Amber, that liven up the narrative. Almost every author has to do that sort of thing with adolescent narrators, and here it's done almost seamlessly.

So, all in all this turned out to be a touching, funny, upbeat and insightful work that had numerous rewards, big and small, on almost every page. A very nice find.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

3.5 stars for me, but do not recommend for children
By Amy @ Books, College, and Other Random Things
I received a copy from the publisher via Net Galley.
Amber is going to a new school and is having trouble coping with her father not being with her family anymore. It doesn’t help matters when her little sister decides to write their Dad and see if he will come for her birthday. Amber doesn’t want to let her sister down and responds back to her letter. Unfortunately, Amber makes an enemy of a troublemaker at school and finds herself in several stressful situations.

I liked that this story dealt with a serious issue in a lighter hearted way that kids can find relatable. This book also touches on topics of lying and bullying. I found the end of the book endearing and found it really believable in how Amber coped with the situations she had at her middle school. She often imagines her “Dad” and talks to him whenever she finds herself stressed or when she has made some decisions that she shouldn’t have made to begin with.

I did feel like the book dragged in places. I am pretty particular when I read children’s books, so I do not really know how kids would respond to the places that seemed slow.

I would not recommend a child reading this book until the parents do because I remember reading it mentioning something that I was shocked was including for a children’s book. It might not be a big deal for some parents, but I would not be okay with it and am not okay for a children’s book.

I am 11 years old boy and i read this book last year. I found that it was fast paced and interesting. I always seemed to be pulling ridiculously large smiles and very loud laughs as i read the book. Amber was definitely the funniest character in a story i have read and always seemed to come up with an imaginative way to get through her life. I am looking forward to reading more books by Emmah Shevah.

A Short History of Medical Ethics, by Albert R Jonsen

A physician says, "I have an ethical obligation never to cause the death of a patient," another responds, "My ethical obligation is to relieve pain even if the patient dies." The current argument over the role of physicians in assisting patients to die constantly refers to the ethical duties of the profession. References to the Hippocratic Oath are often heard. Many modern problems, from assisted suicide to accessible health care, raise questions about the traditional ethics of medicine and the medical profession. However, few know what the traditional ethics are and how they came into being. This book provides a brief tour of the complex story of medical ethics evolved over centuries in both Western and Eastern cultures. It sets this story in the social and cultural contexts in which the work of healing was practiced and suggests that, behind the many different perceptions about the ethical duties of physicians, certain themes appear constantly, and may be relevant to modern debates. The book begins with the Hippocratic Medicine of ancient Greece, moves throught the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Enlightenment in Europe, and the long history of Indian and Chinese medicine, ending as the problems raised modern medical science and technology challenge the settled ethics of the long tradition.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Albert Jonsen, a distinguished theoretician and practitioner of bioethics, has written what is essentially a prehistory of the field. He begins with the Greek and Roman period (from the fifth century b.c.e. to the third century c.e.), moves on to medieval medicine, embarks on a quick tour of medical ethics in India and China, returns to European medical ethics, and then concludes with developments in America. For most of this 2500-year period, medical ethics consisted of physicians' defining the proper conduct for their profession. Jonsen classifies most of this conduct as decorum: demeanor such as politeness and respectfulness that was thought to reflect inner virtue. Other kinds of behavior advocated over the centuries included what Jonsen calls deontology: actions dictated by moral rules, such as refusal to take a life or perform an abortion. Occasionally, the discussions of moral conduct focused on what he calls "politic ethics," the relationship of physicians to the surrounding community, which determined, for example, whether a doctor should flee or stay with his patients during an epidemic of plague.

In the course of exploring the concepts of deontology, decorum, and politic ethics, Jonsen makes interesting observations that challenge prevailing assumptions about ethics. In his discussion of the Hippocratic corpus, he comments on the widely quoted injunction to "do no harm," which may have been a reaction to the tendency to subject patients to the rigors of medicine even though they had no chance of recovering. Jonsen argues that the exhortation against taking on desperate cases, far from endorsing the abandonment of dying patients, was in fact a judicious caution against futile therapy. Jonsen also observes that Eastern and Western cultures shared similar ethical precepts, in contrast to the modern view that medical ethics is culture-specific. At least in the long prehistory of bioethics, he suggests, there may have been a "universal moral atmosphere that surrounds the work of caring for the sick and pervades that work."

Despite its brevity, A Short History of Medical Ethics may be most useful as a reference work. It is full of pithy descriptions of pivotal works. Jonsen devotes several pages to the British physician, Thomas Percival, who introduced the term "medical ethics" in 1803. Percival wrote mainly about decorum but began to view the conduct of physicians in the broad context of the whole society. Jonsen also summarizes the views of the respected American physician Richard Cabot (1868-1939), who helped establish the discipline of medical social work and retooled himself as a moral philosopher. Jonsen sees Cabot's contribution to ethics as the recognition that the physician's primary moral duty was to master scientific medicine and to apply this knowledge to the care of patients.

A Short History of Medical Ethics is a scholarly prologue to the evolving world of contemporary bioethics. In the penultimate chapter, Jonsen takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of some of the seminal events that shaped the new discipline, among them the Nuremberg Tribunal of 1947, with its condemnation of experimentation without the consent of the subjects; the introduction of hemodialysis in 1960 and the adoption of "social worth criteria" for the allocation of resources by the Seattle Artificial Kidney Center; and in 1973, Roe v. Wade, the case in which the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the constitutional right to privacy prevents state laws from restricting the right of a woman to obtain an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Today's bioethics is enriched by a conceptual framework that goes beyond decorum and deontology and that takes the patient's perspective as its starting point. Modern bioethics reformulates the fundamental moral problem as a problem for society, rather than merely one of professional self-regulation. I would add to Jonsen's list of the ways in which today's bioethics has transcended its predecessors the use of empirical data to help answer questions. The old question of whether patients should be told the truth about their conditions, for instance, can be answered in part by studying the types of information patients want and by examining the consequences of their having information. Not surprisingly, A Short History of Medical Ethics is at least as useful for what it tells us about earlier societies as it is for what it tells us about bioethics.

"As Jonsen shows, the history of medical ethics is not short, despite the title of his book. In about one hundred and twenty pages he tells the story of over two thousand years of moral discourse about medicine, covering traditions in both the East and West. Jonsen's tour through time and cultures highlights particular events and persons, and shows that even though there are some cultural differences, common themes coalesce in a long tradition of the ethics of medicine."--Philosophy in Review

The copyright for this book is 2000 not 2008. Good book I utilize it for teaching Clinical Ethics (the history portion of the class) to pre-health profession students 4th year undergraduate education. The need a newer edition though as the year 2000 is leaving out a lot of important ethical concerns and issues that have occurred in the past 12 years. Would also recommend Clinical Ethics in which Albert R. Jonsen is one of three authors of that book. That is the text I teach from for the majority of the class.
