book on cancer

I found this book easy to read and the information was interesting. As I also have ovarian cancer, I was very motivated in reading. I haven't made all of the same choices, but the information was though provoking. I would recommend it as a read to anyone with cancer who has to make these hard decisions. I have used some of the methods described and also followed some of the mainstream treatments and have successfully gone into remission. I think we should explore diet and general health of our own immune system. I gave 4 stars because I don't totally agree that cancer can be controlled without medical help. I have close family members that went totally with diet and non invasive procedures and resulted in her death in a very short time frame.

I had read about this book in Naples Illustrated magazine. I purchased it. I can't even remember the last time I purchased a book. I never have time to read so I only browse through magazines. I flew through this book. Easy to read and held my interest. I am trying to be healthier and learn more about alternative medicine especially since so many people in my family are victims of cancer. I hope to meet Ursula Kaiser one day or attend any seminars she may have. She is living proof that cancer can be fought without chemo and radiation. A real eye opener!

Excellent read! If you have been diagnosed with cancer you should give this a look! The author did so much research that you can use. Supplements, organics, what to change in your new world with cancer and how you can beat it naturally without traditional aggressive measures. Not for everyone, just those that want to heal the cancer, not kill your body.

A closer walk indeed .....

I felt the Lord calling me to try something different. I have always found it very difficult to be still, to sit in silence, to listen to God. So, I decided to give this book a try for Lent since it was geared towards 40 days. Wow! What a powerful instrument to leading us towards a closer walk with God. The author inspires the reader to spend 20 minutes a day in silence. While at first I couldn't do more than a few minutes, gradually the silent time increases. Now, my centering prayer time is the highlight of my day! A must read for anyone challenged to be still in God's presence.

Genius can be hard to understand...

I have completed over 100 sessions of Donald Epsteins "Network Chiropractic" or "Network Spinal Analysis" - and I can vouch for it. I believe it is unique, as it states, and not only is a process whereby you can overcome your pain, discomfort, and tension (defence physiology), but grow as a person overall. The benefits are without a ceiling to the "bodymind", and it just keeps getting better. It doen't even compare for example to the theory so highly touted and created by John Sarno (also reviewed) which is essentially learning how to control your pain. Network unwinds your spinal cord -- where all your tension resides, which is also said to be the subconscious mind.

THIS BOOK however is ABSTRACT, and if you are prone to getting stuck at all, you will. (I have asked several people who have read it, and they all have this same story.) It describes a process of 12 Stages on your healing journey, and you are in one of them now. If you can find it, great, otherwise, it really becomes confusing, and make no mistake, it is hard to read anyway. I quit after 90 pages, and I never went back -- it was that difficult. HOWEVER, it's ultimate "saving grace" is that there are exercises in it that are invaluable. If you are suffering in your life with pain or whatever, go to the first chapter and follow these diagrams and instructions. Photocopy these pages only, if you don't wish to read the book. They only take a couple of minutes. It is possible to get instant and total relief, especially once you have practiced them awhile. At first -- they can be hard to do and create more pain! Don't get discouraged.

A groundbreaking work...

The 12 Stages of Healing presents a model of healing that allows the reader to be more "OK" with their own healing process. By learning to identify yourself in one of the 12 stages, you begin to see that what is going with you is not necessarily a "problem", but rather part of a larger process. The simple act of identifying the stage you're in and then doing the easy breathing exercise designed to get that particular rhythym flowing is often enough to move you into the next stage. I have seen over and over again the natural accuracy of Dr. Epstein's model: the moving from a sense of helplessness, to the reaching out(or sometimes blaming!), to the perceiving the stuck patterns in myself and on and on. Use this book as a daily guide to life's challenges.

Dr. Epstein has help thousands of people get a new perspective of health and healing. The 12 stages model provides ideas for a new journey in understanding the healing process without the usual judgement of symptoms as bad or wrong. The book has some very easy exercises at the end of each chapter that can help integrate awareness to the body with breath and attention. A great book for those looking for a the bigger picture of health (from the inside out)

Ferdinand Marcos came to power in the Philippines in a coup détat in 1972 and ruled absolutely, in the name of order, until his dramatic overthrow in February of 1986. This study examines how the authoritarian regime of Marcos remained in power, sometimes in the face of massive opposition, for 14 years. Repressive regimes may seem undesirable, but they are often able to elicit the support of significant sectors of society. Marcos was able to maintain authoritarian rule through the support of bureaucrats, businessmen, and the military―all with the assistance of the United States government. He maintained this network of support through a patron-client system with a centralized bureaucracy as its power and resource base. In order to reward his supporters, he expanded the authority of government. But to minimize the political cost of expansion, he maintained the legal and constitutional forms of democracy. The Philippine experience in despotism is not unique; many Third World countries are under authoritarian rule. This subtle and nuanced analysis, therefore, provides an examination of the levers of power available to absolute rulers, to better understand the political economy of authoritarianism.

CELOZA is on the Faculty of Social Sciences at Phoenix College and an adjunct professor in International Studies at the American Graduate School of International Management Thunderbird and an affiliate with the Program for Southeast Asian Studies, Arizona State University. But Declan Walsh was a man who earned the Medal of Honor while ordering the death of his best friend, ruled pragmatically and energetically on the Court but lost his wife to death and neglect, and became a miraculous healer assasinated for challenging the powers that rule the secular world. A good read!

Fantastic Read

Don't let the unbelievable premise sway you from reading this book. Its a page turner and a thought provoker. I loved this book and found Declan Walsh to be a great literary character.

Outstanding book!

I originally bought this book when it first was issued in paperback. While packing to move over 10 years ago, I gave away 15 boxes of books, including this one. I've regretted it ever since, and have often spoken of the book to my family and friends. Finally, I decided to get another copy, and I've enjoyed it as much as the first time through.

It is well-written, well-paced, and speaks of what might be for the Catholic Church (I'm a cradle Catholic) were to be led by someone with the simple humanity of Papa Francesco! Despite the pretty much inevitable denouement, I was still captivated by the story and inspired by the fictional life of this man.

I read it more than 20 years ago, but this book should be read by any reader who likes a good novel, with very good writing. Read it. It would make a great movie or tv minimovie.

Preface

When this book was first published in 1969, African-Americans faced a serious crisis arising from the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Angered by this act, blacks took to the streets in cities around the country, demonstrating their outrage by massive acts of property destruction. In general, white individuals and institutions responded to the tragedy of the assassination by attempting to make some amends for past injustices. Colleges and universities recruited black students in greater numbers than ever before, and programs of African-American and African studies were organized on a wide scale. It appeared that equality for blacks had finally become an issue of critical importance.

However, by the time the second edition appeared in 1975, little change in the status of African-American people relative to that of white people had come about, but many changes in the mind and mood of African-American people had occurred, mainly in the ascendancy of nationalist sentiment in the black community. Black nationalist organizations thrived until the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies commenced a systematic campaign to destroy this movement. Because of this campaign and the inevitable internal dissension within these organizations, the movement virtually collapsed. Nevertheless, with the advent of affirmative action, some progress was made in the status of African-Americans in the United States. For a brief time there was an official commitment to racial equality.

With the third edition in 1987, the mood of the country had changed, and conservatism had become the dominant ethos of American politics and of the country as a whole. The right-wing administration of Ronald Reagan and the egocentricity of the American people combined to mount a serious attack on compensatory justice. They were joined in this effort by black conservatives who opposed affirmative action and other measures to improve the lot of African-Americans, insisting that blacks must rely on individual initiative and self-help rather than government assistance. These forces succeeded in reversing some of the gains that African-Americans and others had made through intensive struggle.

The fourth edition in 1993 found African-Americans facing additional challenges of major proportions: acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), adolescent pregnancy and childbearing, crack cocaine and other substance abuse, homelessness, and widespread homicide, among others. By promoting and condoning racial oppression through the years, the government must bear major responsibility for the impact of these problems on African-Americans.

In this, the fifth edition of the book, it should be noted that there has been little, if any, change in the problems enumerated in the fourth edition. In addition, there has been an intensified effort to end affirmative action, thereby impeding an important avenue to black progress. Because of this, a chapter on the subject has been added, along with some other changes, including a chapter on crime and justice.

Although this book is a sociological study of African-Americans, it addresses the general reader as well as the professional student of society. It is hoped that sociological perspective and analysis have not been sacrificed.

Best of Ondaatje's work

I run hot and cold on Michael Ondaatie's writing. However, his new book, THE CAT"S TABLE, resonated in a part of my mind long ignored. In some of his other works, DIVISIDERO and THE ENGLISH PATIENT, to mention a couple, he uses many unlikely characters in the telling of his story that seem to run together with no special destination or closure. To me the books are disjointed and not very interesting or realistic. In Cat's Table, he uses the same formula but with more satisfying results. In fact, having been something of a scoundrel in my early years, the boys in this novel reawakened my early existence with their endless curiosity, mindless pranks, and earthy delight in just being boys.

I'm getting ahead of myself. As Ondaatje said, during an interview, the storyline is "A boy (Michael) gets on a boat...and gets off a boat." Fortunately, for us, the author understates the events that subsequently happen. Interest is added when we get to meet a couple of other boys and the three of them ramble unfettered around a large ship, finding opportunities to spy, to assist in burglary, smoke unknown substances, speculate on human behavior, and develop hot-blooded hormones over attractive girls. I too, at that stage of development, had similar adventures, although my spying was done through grass and brush along a small creek. I peeked through tree branches and gaps in large rocks rather than through the pipes, cables and railings found on a big ship. But I saw a lot of stuff, as these young fellows did.

The boys are joined in their journey from Sri Lanka to England by a tailor, a botanist, a burned-out pianist, a retired ship junker, and a mysterious spinster, all of whom join the boys at their dining table far away from the elite near the Captain's table, hence the name the Cat's Table, a term Ondaatje learned from a German publisher. We also meet a chained murderer, a deaf girl, a high society woman who largely neglects her role as Michael's caretaker and Michael's comely cousin, the igniter of young libidos. All these interesting characters fall into place under Ondaatje's skillful manipulations. The reasons for and details of the ship's journey will remain undisclosed here, as will the flash-backs.

Michael Ondaatje is a controversial writer that readers either adore or loathe. I don't think, however, there's any doubt that he is an author who conveys atmosphere and conversation in a clear and descriptive manner. Mood and place are masterfully conveyed. His writing is spare and lucid, with no cerebral words that need to be found in a dictionary. The only word I recall that stumped me was ayurvedic. It wasn't even in my Webster's Collegiate. I later found it pertains to the ancient Hindu science of health and medicine.

Ondaatje is a poet which probably explains why he is so adept at manipulating the intricacies of space and time. He explains that a poet doesn't say everything in his poems. He says one-third of what should be said is left for the reader to figure out. That's what he tries to do in his novels. That could be the reason he is so controversial among serious readers...some don't want to read between the lines to figure out his storyline. In my opinion, that's not the case in Cat's Table. This book is lighter than some of his others and, although flash-forwards to the future are here, the storyline moves with fluidity and a plainness that made my heart thump and my mind reach for memories. That's what a good book should do, ignite the reader's mind.

It takes a lifetime to come of age

At the age of eleven, Michael boards an ocean liner bound for England. With his friends Cassius and Ramadhin, he explores the ship and befriends eccentric passengers: Mr. Fonseka, a literature teacher from Colombo who displays the "serenity and certainty" Michael has observed "only among those who have the armor of books close by"; Mr. Daniels, who has transformed a section of the hold into an exotic garden; the musician and blues fan Max Mazappa; an Australian girl who greets the dawn by roller skating fiercely around the deck; Miss Lasqueti, a woman with a surprising, hidden background who is traveling with dozens of pigeons; a hearing impaired Singhalese girl named Asuntha, and others. "Simply by being in their midst," the boys are learning about adults, including those assigned to sit with them at the low-status Cat's Table, situated at the opposite end of the dining room from the Captain's Table. Michael's other lessons include his first fleeting experience with love and desire, as well as a taste of European racism, both subtle and (particularly in the case of the ship's captain) overt.

Two other passengers Michael knows only by sight. Sir Hector de Silva, a wealthy but ill passenger in Emperor Class accommodations, has bad luck with dogs, perhaps because a spell was cast upon him. At the opposite end of the social spectrum is a prisoner, rumored to be a murderer, whose midnight strolls on the deck -- closely guarded and in chains -- the concealed boys observe with fascination.

Michael Ondaatje keeps all these characters in motion like a master juggler. They are a fascinating bunch, and Ondaatje weaves them in and out of the narrative while maintaining a perfectly balanced pace: not so quick that the story whizzes by without time to appreciate its nuances; not so deliberate as to lose its energetic force.

At its midway point, the novel skips ahead from the 1953 voyage to events that occur twenty years later in Michael's life, events that trigger memories of the friends with whom he bonded on that formative journey. Although the writing in that section is exceptionally strong and quite moving, it has an out-of-joint feel, particularly when the flash forward ends and the voyage resumes. Subsequent interruptions to tell the reader of future events are shorter and more seamlessly integrated into the narrative. Eventually those passages become essential to the story; they complete it. Ondaatje writes: "Over the years, confusing fragments, lost corners of stories, have a clearer meaning when seen in a new light, a different place." The perspective that Michael gains with time, after reconnecting with individuals he met on the voyage, permits him (and thus the reader) to reinterpret events that occurred on the ocean -- particularly a moment of drama that becomes the story's nucleus, and that Michael can only understand fully many years later. For that reason, although The Cat's Table could be viewed as a coming of age novel, I think Ondaatje is suggesting that we spend our lifetimes coming of age -- that is, acquiring the wisdom and perspective of adulthood.

There is a restrained, graceful elegance to Ondaatje's prose that every now and then made me stop, blink, and reread a beautifully composed sentence or paragraph. He writes with affection of dogs and artists, of the needy and of those who give selflessly of themselves. This is a marvelously humane novel that works on a number of levels, but most of all, it is a joy to read.

I don't think I'm not reasonably intelligent...

but I am not sure I "got" a lot of what was going on in this novel. While I loved the first third of the book, the last two-thirds eroded that sentiment.

"The Cat's Table" is the story of Michael, an 11-year-old who is put on a ship for a three-week voyage from Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) to England. Through his assignment to the "Cat's Table," he meets up with two other boys about his age and various other characters (and there are a few at other tables whom he knows or gets to know).

The first part of the novel is told exclusively from the point of view of 11-year-old Michael and it is highly entertaining and enjoyable to observe his exploits and hear his observations from them. Thereafter, the book skips forward and backward in time, so we hear from the adult Michael about things that happened to him and other characters since the trip, as well as his recounting of some of the events that took place on the ship from the vantage point of recollection, rather than observation. It is a result of this frequent change of time and perspective that I got somewhat lost in and bogged down by the book.

In addition, as the story is told by Michael, what he observes and chooses to tell us is all we really know about the other characters in the book; there is very little opportunity to observe them directly. As a result, I never really came to care much about any of the charactersin the novel. In this regard, I find it interesting to note that "The Cat's Tale" contains more characters than are in several of Michael Ondaatje's other novels COMBINED. I think this fact serves to highlight that Ondaatje is better than most authors at creating beautiful pictures and atmospheres with his words, but is not nearly as good at creating fully realized characters.

I give the book three stars for it wonderful beginning, its beautiful language, and flashes of insight into human nature (generally, rather than of any specific character). I can't give it any more than three stars, however, because of its convoluted storytelling and its failure to move me.
