A Top Notch Thriller

I'm familiar with Eloise Knapp for her apocalypse novels, which are excellent. “Anamnesis” is her latest novel, and it’s a totally different genre. It’s a thriller, no zombies at all. I wasn’t sure what to expect when picking this up, but I was pleasantly surprised. She completely delivers in this one, and it’s very clear that her ability to plot and maintain tension throughout a story is approaching stellar. The novel introduces us to Ethan, a drug selling junkie with several years missing from his memory. Yet he has never really cared to look into why that is. Along the way, he meets Olivia, who seeks him out because her story is similar. Olivia is high class and a bit prissy, so having these two characters thrown together in a common cause is quite a wonderful thing to behold. They set out together, at arms length, to solve the mystery of what has happened to them. What they find is a sordid tale that grows more and more sinister. I really liked the character of Ethan, he was funny, a bit crass, with a totally doesn’t give a crap attitude. Just getting by. Knapp has a talent with dialogue and creating believable characters, and she does so again here. I really hope she continues writing in this genre. A great read packed with tension and surprise. I highly recommend it.

Gritty, macabre, twisted - all the things a thriller should be!

I read it in two sittings...the story starts off fast and doesn't let up until the last page. While there's a few quality gunfights, you mostly follow Ethan Knight's journey rediscovering who he is and helping a woman named Olivia Holloway discover what's been happening to her during her own mysterious lost time. Ethan Knight's identity has been lost due to illegal pharmaceutical testing. Loved that big pharma angle! Audience beware, this story has numerous mature themes: language, violence, drug use, and some macabre sexual situations. None are gratuitous, as in they aren't there for shock and awe. I found that they were used well in developing the story and painting a truly depraved, dark, accurate portrayal of a man struggling to make something of himself when the odds are stacked against him.

Branching out and breaking free at its finest!

I've been a fan of Eloise since I first read her epic zombie trilogy, and this is her first breakthrough into another genre. When I first read this, I was excited by the prospect of a writer branching off and trying their hand at something different. To my great enjoyment, she did not disappoint. The book starts out leaving the reader as confused as the protagonist. Then, as the story continues we start to see more into the twisted world that brought the protagonist situation.

Without getting too carried away with the plot, I'll have to state one thing for certain. You'll never see it coming!

Interesting reference book

This book is divided into lights with various materials such as ceramics, plastics, paper, etc. The lights are fun, zany, aesthetically pleasing, as a form of art, contribution towards perserving the environment through the usage of recylcleable material, avant-garde, elegant, practical, simple. The book also depicts the mechanism of some lights & how the lights are installed. Some of them are plain simple but downright effective & I wonder to myself aloud why wouldn't I think of that before. This book doesn't contain much classic lights or probably, it deliberately chooses not to feature lights of the famous but exposing the readers to more diversified range of lights by various designers. Despite so, there are still lights by Philippe Starck, but Ingo Maurer can't be seen & neither does Archille Castiligione. Probably this lighting reference book is not as precise as I want but still, it doesn't detract from the fact that it reveals to us there are almost unlimited way of expressing our creativity over the expression of light. Keep up the good work.

Danny Smiricky, already known to Skvorecky's readers, is obsessed with jazz and with girls. His vain pursuit of six provincial beauties is the basis of these stories, set during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. To win over these girls, Danny does their homework, sets up elaborate schemes to be alone with them, even engages in modest anti-Nazi action. But things always go wronga girl's father interferes, the courted girls gang up on him, he is upstaged by a less notorious young manand he is left with only his music as consolation. While Danny's erotic pursuits are at times humorous and his adolescent wistfulness is captured accurately, this is a minor work of the acclaimed Czech emigre author of Engineer of Human Souls ( LJ 7/84). About the Author

JOSEF SKVORECKY is an award-winning author whose novels include An Inexplicable Story, The Bass Saxophone, The Mournful Demeanor of Lieutenant Boruvka, and The Swell Season. He has also written many short stories and film scripts, and is the winner of the 1980 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. He lives in Toronto with his wife.

The book of loving

The Swell Season is one of the loveliest books I have ever read. It is the story of a young man searching for intimacy with the lovely young female friends of his small hometown during the Nazi occupation of Chekovslovakia. The young girls listen to his lovely musical overtures, but they never give in. Danny loves them, is fascinated by them, and he never fails to tell them this. But he never seems to be able to convince them to yield to him. But they all want to be loved by him. They revel in his love letters. They are jealous when he seems to favor others. He is there perfect lover...pure...and never to be had.

If you like Milan Kundera check out this author. He speaks of human folly with humor honesty and tenderness. He addresses major human issues with incredible specificity and with a little more sensitivity than Kundera. Enjoy.
