War on the Saints, by Jessie Penn-Lewis

A witness of the Welch Revival at the dawn of the 20th century, Jessie Penn-Lewis saw the rise of many extreme practices which brought about the decline of the spirit of revival. She shows Satan's many methods of spiritual deception used to confuse and entrap believers and keep them from effectively following God. You will be shocked and anged as you see how successful these methods have been throughout the centuries and perhaps in your own life. This classic work on spiritual warfare and demonic oppression stands in stark contrast to many current books that are based on personal experiences and not on the Word of God.

Jessie Pen-Lewis would flip in her grave
By Tony Reinke
After reading the original manuscript of the 1912 version of War on the Saints, I was suprised at the vast amount of changes in this version of the book as well as the "unabridged" version as well! Whitaker House, the publisher, has deleated many of Penn-Lewis' Biblical teachings on Christians and demonization. It is well documented that Christians tody CAN be deminically influenced. It is a shame that Whitaker House has republished this work claiming it to be authentic. To get the full message of what Jessie Penn-Lewis was getting at, you'll have to find a used copy. It will be well worth your time. War on the Saints is the most powerful book in the history Christian literature!

Be Careful which version you buy
By Apex
There are more than 7 versions of this book available. Ensure the version you purchase has not been devalued with excessive editing. Only the unabridged hardcover version (ISBN: 0913926043) by Thomas E. Lowe Ltd is likey to be the complete book. If you can find the original 1912 edition, all the better.

Another book on spiritual warfare printed by Thomas E Lowe LTD is Blumhart's Battle. It is a true story about Pastor Johann Christoph Blumhardt fight against the demonic possession of a member of his Lutheran church in the small Black Forest town of Möttlingen, Germany during the 1840's. The book has an ISBN of: 0913926019 and makes the exorcist look like child's play. That book will seriously move you.

Another version of the same story is ISBN 087486982X.

ONGUARD UNABRIDGED
By Garland Crump Ministries
War on the Saints was a gift some 20 years ago. It was a battle just to read it. I gave a copy to a spiritual friend who placed it on the dash of his truck, but was able to read only 6 pages within 5 months. This will be the most difficult book you will ever read. The devil does not want to be exposed. When you begin to read you will get sleepy; the phone and the doorbell will ring forever; you'll get a headache; your eyes will blur, you will be supplied with hundreds of "reasonings" that you don't need to read it, etc.

Most Christians are not aware of being in a spiritual war, but God has given us this sweetheart of spiritual warfare, Jesse Penn-Lewis, to whom He has revealed devilish tactics (2 Corinthians 2:11). While reading War on the Saints, you will get angry when you discover how many times the devil has duped you as well as your loved ones and the body of Christ. The awakening will be like finding yourself naked in the midst of a packed house at Madison Square Garden. But you will become strong in the Lord.
The Army teaches us to begin "hand to hand" combat in the onguard position. So, I challenge you to strap on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). We have authority over all the devil's power "and nothing shall by any means hurt us" (Luke 10:19). Revelation 12:11 declares the winner, "the saints overcame the devil by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."
God needs Christian warriors. The recruiter.

SHOULD BE READ BY YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE.
By D. Blankenship
As noted in the description of this work, "To be A Slave" was a 1969 Newbery Honor Book, An ALA Notable Book, a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and a Smithsonian Magazine Best Book of the Year. Seldom have I read a book that was actually deserving of these awards more than this work, and in my opinion, so many, many more!

I must note right up front that even though this work was and is targeted for the 9 to 12 age group, it is applicable and fitting for just about any age group over the age of 9. I strongly suggest that this age group, or many in it, may not be ready for this particular read. In my opinion the age grouping probably should start at about 15 or 16 at the earliest. Younger readers should probably have some adult guidance. Folks, we are talking pretty brutal here. Rarely have I read an "adult" work covering this subject which held the dignified impact this book offers. It is profoundly upsetting, and rightfully so. The author, Julius Lester, pulls no punches throughout the entire work and gives his readers a dreadful dose of reality. I must admit that many passages in this work; many of the firsthand accounts (more about that later) of former slaves in the United States, made me literally physically ill. This is a good thing as it is like a cold splash of water (or more accurately...acid), in the face, bring the reader from a compete state of sleep into full and painful wakefulness and awareness.

Many of the stories told here were either suppressed or more or less ignored until the 1930s when the Federal Writers Project was organized. One of their tasks was to interview as many former slaves as possible and record as accurately as possible their story. The author is quick to point out that due to the times, much liberty was taken in rewriting in reference to dialect as it was felt that the average reader simply would not understand the words written and also due to the fact that it was feared that by using the dialect of many individuals interviewed would place in the hand ammunition for those that were trying to prove the inferiority of the Black Race. So sad, but the authors or interviewers did a wonderful job and to a certain extent I must agree with their decision to do this. I have noted that the youth of today have great trouble if reading various dialects and it turns them off a book quite quickly. This is a pity, but we must face the reality of the situation.

This work is a collection of actual interviews with former slaves, not only from the Writer's Project, but documents dating back to the founding of the nation. Most of these interviews and accounts can be found in the Library of Congress. This work covers every aspect of the life of a slave, from their capture in Africa, their trip through the Middle Passage, and then their life of servitude in their new "home." The author addresses the extreme mental and physical cruelty involved, the daily life of a plantation slave, the slave breeding farms of Virginia, the deplorable living condition that the vast majority of these people were forced to live in, the tearing apart of families, diet, clothing, working conditions...and on and on.

I was absolutely delighted in the fact that through this collection of first hand accounts and the authors side comments, that the myth of the "happy darkie" who was content in his or her lot in life and that the vast majority of slaves were quite devoted to their masters. This is a myth that still lingers to this very day in some quarters.

The author is quick to point out that the United States, of all the slave holding countries in the Western Hemisphere, was probably the most brutal and efficient in the effort to stamp out all cultural identity. Various methods were used from the extremely brutal to a rather sophisticated (for that time) brain washing. Religion was used as an effective weapon by the slave holders, which is pretty disgusting when you stop to think of it.

Now readers take warning! There are aspects of this work that are upsetting to the extreme! Accounts recorded during the Middle Passage of babies being thrown over the side of the ship, the deliberate drowning of infants in front of their mothers on Plantations, the tearing apart of families at auction and the sever savagery of the beatings and torture of many of these unfortunate individuals makes for some very grim reading. The simple act of making it through a work day on a typical plantation was an absolute horror. And this went on day after day after day for an entire life time for many of these individuals.

This is classified as a YA but is a rather hardcore YA but that being said, it is probably one of the most useful, effective and truthful books of this genre I have read in years. I cannot imagine a more effective teaching tool. Our country went through two major blights, very dark areas in our history, which are still with us today...slavery and the genocide of the Native Americans. We need to be aware of both of these horrors least we forget. Works such as this go along way in the education process and to be quite frank, we need more of this caliber.

This work needs to be at the head of any young persons reading list, and I must say that it should be at the head of any adults list too. I highly recommend this work but do be prepared to be shocked if you have neglected your readings in the past addressing this subject. For the adult reader, I might suggest further reading and the work This Species of Property: Slave Life and Culture in the Old South (Galaxy Books)

it was phenominal
By A Customer
1968 School Library Journal Best Book of the Year In an intensely personal new introduction written for this thirtieth anniversary edition, Julius Lester states that at age ten, when his father told him his family's history went back to a bill of sale and no further, the words were one of the defining moments of my life. Approximately fifteen years later he began compiling the words of ex-slaves--a good portion of which had never been previously published--and establishing the structure for To Be a Slave. The ease and speed with which this structure came made him realize that this book was one of the things [he] had been put on earth to do. In an equally eloquent, new introductory note Tom Feelings expresses a similar sentiment regarding the personal impact of his work for To Be a Slave and his belief in doing work that mov[es] us so emotionally, it makes all of us feel its truth way down deep inside. For thirty years American readers of all ages and walks of life have been affected by the truth of To Be a Slave, which remains one of the few works to present what it felt like to be slave in America in the words of black men and women who lived it rather than filtered through the eyes of others. Paired with Mr. Lester's historical commentary and powerful and soulful paintings by Mr. Feelings, To Be a Slave makes the clear and moving distinction between the generalizations made about slaves and what the emotional reality was for human beings [whose] condition was slavery. I am grateful to the parents, teachers, librarians, and booksellers who have found [To Be a Slave] to be of value. Most of all I am grateful to all those who have read it, to all those who read it. History is not just facts and events. History is also a pain in the heart, and we repeat history until we are able to make another's pain in the heart our own. -- Julius Lester The truth can stretch children's minds, stimulate their imaginations in a creative way, and strengthen their spirits.

Great Rebuttal To The Ole Stars-And-Bars Apologists
By Franklin the Mouse
My 12-year-old son, who is in 7th grade, selected this book from his English teacher's personal class library. It had a huge impact on our African-American son. He as well as his older brother are black and adopted. My wife and I are white. We spent quite a few hours talking about the nature of prejudice and how it manifests in many different ways. I promised "To Be a Slave" was the next one on my list after completing the book I was currently reading. The paradigm for our family is anything goes when it comes to topics we discuss: race, drugs, sex, religion, profanity etc.

Mr. Lester's compilation and descriptions cover the full extent of slavery in America. In their own words, the former slaves describe being abducted from their African homeland; the brutality endured during their arduous trek to North America; the slave auctions; the horrible separation of families to different slave buyers; beatings; plantation life; religious beliefs; Uncle Toms; efforts at resistance; Emancipation and Jim Crow laws. The blunt nature of the stories left a pit in my stomach. Mr. Feelings' accompanying black-&-white drawings add another level of gloom to the work.

Mr. Lester's book is outstanding. It may be tailored for young teens, but the interviews and descriptions supplied by the author are also extremely useful for adults. I seriously question the criteria used for designating certain books as "young reader" material. I read a great deal of nonfiction work and "To Be a Slave" holds up well compared to other books deemed "adult fare." You won't step away from this book without thinking about the darker aspects of the human condition. Educational and riveting stuff packed between this small work that will help anyone understand the true evils of slavery. It's no wonder "this peculiar institution" has left lasting generational scars even up to today.

Tippi: A Memoir, by Tippi Hedren

In this absorbing and surprising memoir, one of the biggest names of classic Hollywood—the star of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Marnie—tells her story, including never-before-revealed experiences on the set of some of the biggest cult films of all time.

For decades, Tippi Hedren’s luminous beauty radiated from the silver screen, enchanting moviegoers and cementing her position among Hollywood’s elite—beauty and star power that continue to endure. For too long Hedren’s story has been told by others through whispered gossip and tabloid headlines. Now, Hedren sets the record straight, recalling how a young and virtuous Lutheran girl from small-town Minnesota became a worldwide legend—as one of the most famous Hitchcock girls, as an unwavering animal activist, and as the matriarch of a powerful Hollywood dynasty that includes her movie star daughter Melanie Griffith, and rising star Dakota Johnson, her granddaughter.

For the first time, Hedren digs deep into her complicated relationship with the man who discovered her talent, director Alfred Hitchcock, the benefactor who would become a repulsive and controlling director who contractually controlled her every move. She speaks openly about the dark pain she endured working with him on their most famous collaborations, The Birds and Marnie, and finding the courage she needed to break away.

Hedren’s incandescent spirit shines through as she talks about working with the great Charlie Chaplin, sharing the screen with some of the most esteemed actors in Hollywood, her experiences on some of the most intriguing and troubling film sets—including filming Roar, one of the most dangerous movies ever made—and the struggles of being a single mother—balancing her dedication to her work and her devotion to her daughter—and her commitment to helping animals.

Filled with sixteen pages of beautiful photos, Tippi is a rare and fascinating look at a private woman’s remarkable life no celebrity aficionado can miss.

From the Back Cover

For decades, Tippi Hedren’s luminous beauty radiated from the silver screen, enchanting moviegoers and cementing her among Hollywood’s elite. From Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds to Roar, one of the most controversial movies ever made, Tippi Hedren has had few dull moments, and though stories about her have spread through whispered gossip and tabloid headlines, she has never told the full tale of her astonishing life in her own words -until now.

In Tippi, this cinematic icon pulls back the veil on her storied life, detailing her rise from humble beginnings in Depression-era small-town Minnesota to becoming the matriarch of a powerful Hollywood dynasty that includes her movie-star daughter, Melanie Griffith, and her granddaughter Dakota Johnson. This extraordinary career started simply, with a chance meeting that led to her early modeling career—first in department-store fashion shows, then working with Eileen Ford—and eventually to the commercial that caught the eye of legendary director Alfred Hitchcock.

For the first time, Tippi shares the entire story of her complicated relationship with Hitchcock, the man who discovered her talent but also became her obsessive tormentor. Going behind the scenes of her classic films The Birds and Marnie, Tippi details both the glamourous whirlwind that brought her to Hollywood as well as the dark pain she endured while working with Hitchcock, whose controlling behavior and attention quickly proved inescapable. Speaking candidly about being a single mother and shielding her daughter from her struggles on and off of Hitchcock’s set, Tippi provides deep insight into some of the most challenging years of her life and demonstrates how, despite Hitchcock’s threats to ruin her career, her uncompromising spirit finally gave her the courage to break free.

Difficult as her experiences with Hitchcock were, they nearly paled in comparison to her time on the set of Roar—a film starring dozens of live lions and tigers that has since become one of the most notorious film productions of all time. Including never-before-revealed details about the unbelievable making of the movie, Tippi describes how what began as a simple movie about big cats evolved into a sprawling, dangerous endeavor that consumed her career and often put lives, including hers and her family’s, at risk. Tippi offers a clear-eyed and surprising look at the perilous chances they took, while also recounting how these events led to years of animal-rights activism, culminating in the creation of her very own big-cats preserve, Shambala. And yet, through it all, Tippi shows how her career and life have continued to embody her unwavering devotion—to her daughter, Melanie; to her animal-rights activism; to her humanitarian relief work overseas; and to her art.

Filled with sixteen pages of beautiful photographs, Tippi is a rare look at a private woman’s truly remarkable life. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of one of Hollywood’s greatest treasures—an actress whose skill onscreen was matched only by her strength off it.

About the Author
Tippi Hedren is an actress and an activist for animal rights, as well as a recognized humanitarian for her efforts with and dedication to the women of Vietnam, helping to create a multibillion-dollar manicuring industry. She has appeared in over thirty-five television projects and more than forty-five films, including the starring roles in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Marnie, and Roar. She also appeared in Charlie Chaplin's last film, A Countess from Hong Kong, making her the only actress to have worked with both great directors. her beautifully written memoir
By Jessica
Tippi Hedren is one heck of a class act as proven in this, her beautifully written memoir. She writes with an honesty and humility that one would not expect from someone who has lived a life of such depth in the wiles of Hollywood.

Where many of her experiences could, without question, have resulted in overwhelming bitterness and resentment, Tippi writes of them with genuine grace. Having the platform of a memoir, she could have easily held court in the arena of disparagement, but instead owns each of her experiences and manages to find the spoils amongst the hurt and disappointment.

It isn't with pretention or some faux Pollyanna-esque facade that Hedren pens the navigation of her life, but with refreshingly genuine gratitude for life's ups, downs, and all-arounds.

I rarely find a memoir difficult to put down, but this one had my interest from the beginning. I read it nearly non-stop over a day and a half. The book is easy to read with lovely stories from all seasons of Hedren's life. Her movie, The Birds, was the first horror film I ever saw...probably much too young!, but I found it both insanely fascinating and intensely horrifying. Later, I studied the film in college and became a fan of Hedren's other works, subsequently stumbling upon those iconic lion photos. Tippi's tales of chasing renegade lions back to her house are hilarious!

Thank you for such an enjoyable read, Ms. Hedren. Your lovely spirit shone through on every page!

Fame survivor
By Kindle Customer
Tippi Hedren doesn't jump out when one thinks of Hollywood survivors. Other than The Birds and Marnie her acting career while lengthy wasn't noteworthy. But her life is! It is rare to read about an actress whose obsession isn't herself. Ms Hedren has devoted her life to rescuing big cats and pursuing good works involving hunger. There is little sentimentality about her accomplishments in her telling. Rather she lives the best life she can. This "under the radar" actress has written a fascinating memoir. I highly recommend it to all who love to read about surviving joyfully.

Not a Pleasing Read
By SPS
The best part of this book was her love and care for animals. Too many parts were disjointed and disturbing to read. I found myself having to go back for find continuity. Some times she tells how broke they are, and then proceeds to tell about safaris to Africa. For her love and care of animals I would rate her highly, as an author I would rate her so-so, but as a parent I can not give her any respect. She seems to have put animals before her children when they were growing up. I was horrified she allowed her 14 year old daughter to live with a 22 year old man.
As she relates her daughter and she are now 'best friends', but was hard for me to get beyond that.

Queer Externalities: Hazardous Encounters in American Culture (SUNY series in Queer Politics and Cultures), by W. C. Harris

Provocative take on the negative effects of increasing queer visibility and assimilation on the lives of queer people and politics in the U.S.

In television shows such as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and movies like Brokeback Mountain, as well as gay young adult novels and other media coverage of queer people—including the outing of several prominent Republicans—queer lives are becoming more visible in the media and in U.S. culture more generally. How does the increasing visibility of queer subjects within mainstream culture affect possibilities for radical and transformative queer activism? Provocative and challenging, W. C. Harris argues that rather than simply being a cause for celebration, this “mainstreaming” of queer lives may have as many negative effects as positive ones for contemporary gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. Harris builds on the work of queer and political theorists such as Eve Sedgwick, David Halperin, Michael Warner, and Wendy Brown to examine the side effects that can be generated when queers assimilate, and argues for a reinvigorated queer essentialism in order to claim a separate and visible political and activist space within U.S. culture.

“Queer Externalities is everything a queer intervention should be: gutsy, irreverent, and thoroughly enjoyable! W. C. Harris never fails to surprise, provoke, and entertain.” — Donald E. Hall, author of Reading Sexualities: Hermeneutic Theory and the Future of Queer Studies

“Harris’s thesis is significant and important, covering ground often ignored in other volumes of queer studies. Readers also interested in U.S. history in general, as well as pop culture and queer lit, would find this volume invaluable. Dealing with current, relevant topics, this engaging book ranges gracefully from Anita Bryant to instant messaging.” — Jim Elledge, author of A History of My Tattoo

Coastal Engineering - Waves, Beaches, Wave-Structure Interactions, by T. Sawaragi

The science and technology of coastal and ocean engineering are closely related to harbour and fishery engineering, because they share a common basic knowledge. However, whereas various publications of coastal engineering, harbour engineering, and ocean engineering have described just the knowledge in their own respective fields, an interrelated and systematic presentation linking them together has yet to be attempted. This book is the first attempt to systematically combine the fields of coastal, ocean, harbour, and fishery engineering from an engineering viewpoint backed by hydrodynamics. Understanding the interaction of waves with structures and sediment, and predicting the associated responses of interest, underlie nearly every problem in coastal and ocean engineering. This is precisely the goal of this book. Although primarily intended for use as a special textbook for graduate students and senior practising engineers, it is hoped that this book will also serve as a useful reference and assist in the further development of this field. With these objectives in mind, each chapter deals with important problems to be solved in the near future. The references included in each chapter should aid students and practising engineers in further broadening their knowledge. This book is the English translation of the original Japanese version published in May, 1991, commemorating the author's retirement from Osaka University. "Elsevier will be named copyright holder of the English translated publication of the Work. This grant by Gihodo Publishers Ltd. (GP) only pertains to the English language version of the Work and no other rights, except to publish the Work in the English language, are granted to Elsevier Science (ES) by GP, which is acknowledged by ES to be the original copyright holder in the Work".

Highly academic, not usable as a reference.
By C. T. Williams
This book dives directly into multivariable partial differential equations and expects to reader to gain understanding by following a poorly presented set of equations. It would be far better to take the time and space to explain things in text instead of expecting the reader to slug through math guessing at the intent. The information I was looking for may be buried in the book but I do not have 400 hours to search the book for it. The book might be useful in an academic environment with full lecture filling in the missing pieces but this is not a good stand reference. This is a book I will not be keeping in my technical library.

This Manga Rocks!!
By Laura C. Logsdon
Yeah, I got exactly what I expected out of this Graphic Novel. The anime follows it very closely. The art work is great and the story is even better. If you're a true Naruto fan, you have to buy this!

Simply Solid
By C. Mendoza-tolentino
This is the second volume following the 2 year gap after the fight between Sasuke and Naruto and I must say that this series keeps on moving. I originally watched most of it in the original Japanese with subtitles, and although there has been some deviations in translation, the series is still highly entertaining and incredibly imaginative. I find myself racing out to pick up every new volume and I cannot wait till the next volume comes out.

In many ways, Volume 29 can be described as a series of smaller battles in preparation for some major confrontations. Kikashi and Naruto take on Itachi and Guy and his team battle Kisame. All of this takes place while the Akatsuke start extracting the fox spirit from Gaara's body.

For Naruto fans, this is a great volume, one that will leave you itching for more.

Great
By Jason
For a used book, this book was actually in great condition. The description says there might be highlights or underline markings but none were found in my book. The only complaint I have is that the book was curved one way as if it was forced into a small mailbox. Other than that, the book is in great condition. If you are trying to collect this series, this is a good way to save money because it is half the price of a new book at a book store. The only con is that if you are trying to collect them in really good condition, this might not be for you. If you get a new Naruto manga book, it will have a smooth/ oily texture. The texture on this book felt rough. Other than that, for a used book this is amazing.

Tries to entertain and teach, succeeds at neither.
By D. Kruger
This book tries to be two things: a guide to interesting areas of mathematics, and a playful children's book involving a cutesy cat character Penrose. It fails on both counts because it doesn't tie them together. The cat is just a transparent attempt to grab children's interest, and this heavy-handed gimmick fails miserably. The math is simply presented, having nothing to do with a coherent story. The result is ineffective and uninteresting.

Contrast this with Malba Tahan's "The Man who Counted" and "The Number Devil." There is no comparison.

I would love to see the concept in "The Man who Counted" taken much further, integrating higher mathematics into a real story. Unfortunately, this isn't it.

Math tales

I'm not sure the intended audience of this book. The pictures are too minimal for early elementary, with content far above them. The grades for whom the content is appropriate would probably find the stories unappealing. They didn't catch my interest either. To its credit, the book has some interesting sidebars and activities for teacher use. My resources would not have been lacking if I'd passed on this purchase.

Fractals and Googols. . . and Penrose
By Anonymous Parent
Theoni Pappas has written several books of mathematical 'tales' including the well-know Penrose books.
"Fractals, Googols and other Mathematical Tales" includes a total of 22 topical tales.

The table of contents helpfully includes information as to the topic discussed in that tale, as the chapter titles, 'Dr. Spacemath', for example, do not always indicate what the topic is!
Unfortunately, if you already have the Penrose books, you will find that at least 9 of the chapters in "Fractals" are repeated from the Penrose books. Several of these have been condensed and it seems as though the author's commentary has been added to some in a purple side-bar in keeping with the style of the rest of the book.

While the Penrose books are clearly written for and to those new to the world of mathematics, "Fractals" includes small-print, purple side-bars that seem to be written to a parent/teacher.
As in the Penrose books, there is a section in the very back that includes solutions to puzzles and challenges posted in the book.

We are big fans of the Penrose books and Theoni Pappas, and while 'Fractals' does indicate topics in the table of contents, I wish that all these books had a good index to make it easier to find tales and activities that are relevant to a student's current topic of study.
I was also disappointed that so many of the tales in "Fractals" are repeats from the Penrose books.

However, if you do not already have Penrose, this would be a great book to introduce you to Pappas' unique approach to mathematical tales.

Dictionary of the Khazars: A Lexicon Novel in 100,000 Words, by Milorad Pavic

A novel despite its title, this book spans five centuries and is a mixture of fable, fiction and history. This is the male edition which differs slightly but significantly from the accompanying female edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Available in slightly differing "male" and "female" editions, the narrative purports to be the historical record of the Khazars, a fictional Indo-European tribe that vanished in the 10th century. "Pavic is a 20th-century Scheherazade," acknowledged PW . "Readers who are intrigued by literary conundrums will enjoy entering this magical world with Pavic as their guide."

From Library Journal
Christina Pribicevic-Zoric. LC 88-45262. $19.95. f Yugoslav writer Pavic assures us that the Khazars were a nomadic people who settled near the Black Sea in the 7th century A.D. "But their origins remain unknown and all traces of them have vanished." A thousand years later a Polish printer incorporated surviving knowledge of the Khazars into a dictionaryalmost all copies of which were burned by the Inquisition. Pavic's interlocking series of witty and fantastic tales purports to update that edition, but by now all "facts" about the forgotten nation are doubly conjectural. As if the truth weren't problematic enough already, Pavic has even produced his lexicon in "male" and "female" versions differing by only a few (highly significant!) words. This congeries will delight readers of Borges and Calvino, although libraries will need to buy both editions to satisfy them.Grove Koger, Boise P.L., Id.

Review
"All its delights...the structural novelty and the comic inventiveness of the imagery...[are] an ebullient and generous celebration of the reading experience."

-- The New York Times Book Review

"As with Borges or Garcia Marquez...[Pavic] knows how to support his textual legerdemain with superb portrait miniatures and entrancing anecdotes." -- Washington Post Book World

Between total fantasy and magical realism
By J. Angus Macdonald
I saw this book in a store and saw that there were two editions. This intrigued me -- why "Male" & "Female". It was only several years later on the Internet that I was finally able to find the differing sections -- and different they are, although not necessary for the enjoyment of the book. Choose either edition; you will find the same pleasure.
The Khazars were a real people, holding wide areas of modern-day Russian. They did convert, eventually to Judaism, although you would never learn this from Pavic in particular. No, Pavic is not worried about the reality of the Khazars, but in the melding of cultures of the Balkans, the state of Man and God and their relationships to each other, and odd connections that a literate reader makes between multiple books.
This is not a book with a plot. This is not a book with a single or simple way to read it. I believe that I have read the whole book twice, but they only way I could say that for certain would to be like Hansel and Gretzel and leave marks on the pages that I have actually finished. Like swimming through a dictionary or encyclopedia, this book invites you to read sections in no particular order, or, more realistically, in the order YOU see fit to choose.
The three sections (Christina, Muslem, Jewish) are seperated, yet intermingled due to cross references (many of them contradictory). They are colour-coded, yet this only provides one level of deliniation. Each section is set up like an encyclopedia in its own right. The unifying figure of Princess Ateh is sure to intrigue any sagacious reader; the whimsical nature of the book may seem superficial at first, but you will be drawn deeper into the mystery of "What is this all about?"
Prepare to lose yourself in a magical world of words and inter-relations. I have noted that previous reviewers have compared the writing to Marquez and Calvino -- this is not far off the mark, especially if one could only spin the two together.

The book that took the place of a people
By A Customer
This book was written by a serbian professor of literature, but might have been written by a former argentinian librarian: Jorge Luis Borges. Both the authors share a love for combinatorics, puzzling coincindences, catalogues, and bizzarre stories. Their stile is rational and dramatic at the same time, like the facade of a baroque church. Also, this book was published in 1986, the year of Borges' death, and is maybe the epitaph that Borges would have liked.
This is a book about the truth. The king of a mysterious people (the Khazars) summons three sages (a christian, a muslim and a jew), because he wants to convert to the true god. Centuries later, three literati write their own accounts of that conversion (each one is different). And this century, three researcher investigate again on what happened.
Finally, there is not a single truth. The book is organized as a dictionary, or better, three dictionaries (one for each religion). Every word inspires a different story and explanation, but all are filled with magic events and mysterious characters. The reader is the ultimate investigator -- and creator -- of the Khazar empire. It's up to him to discover the truth.
A final (and personal) note. This "dictionary" may seem an extremely sophisticated literary game, similar to those of Calvino and Perec. This is is true, but there is more. When the book was out, the civil war (apparently motivated by secular religious intolerance) had not begun yet. To me, this book seems also a passionate attempt to show how difficult is to attain the truth, and an invitation to tolerance.

A world of its own, superb
By Antonio Acuna
This book has taken me years to read, not because it reads badly, or because it lacks hooks, au contraire, the problem is that there is so much to take in, such richness, that I spend my time re-reading and cross-reading all the time.

The book is basically a dictionary of the imaginary Khazar people (this one happens to be the male version, the female version differs in only one word, but THAT makes all the difference), you read it as you would any other dictionary, you pick and entry and you read, that entry is also filled with cross references to other entries, where pertinent. It is at that point that the fun begins. By navigating in seemingly random fashion, a world begins to emerge, one as mystical and strange as it is real and solid.

Pavic has an unusual command of the absurdity of meaning; his juxtaposition of the normal with the bizarre as if there was nothing to it makes reading him exciting, new. The book will probably appeal to the historian inside us, as well as to the meddler, the gossiper and the prude in us. That juxtaposition creates a desire to know 'what next then?'

We meet princesses with deadly eyelids, slow mirrors and fast mirrors, poisonous books and killer winks...

Read it, but you will never be done with it!
