The real deal...

I think that James Lee Burke outdid himself with his latest Dave Robicheaux mystery, The Tin Roof Blowdown. Burke has often used the backdrop of New Orleans for his often dark and tortured books. But no fictional event could have provided as much material as Hurricane Katrina did in 2005.

Dave Robicheaux is a detective with the New Iberia Sheriff's Department, outside of New Orleans. When Katrina hits the Crescent City, all outside law enforcement agencies sent available officers to aid with the chaos that resulted. Robicheaux spent time in Viet Nam, but nothing he saw in war could have prepared him for what he witnessed in New Orleans. When he left Nam, he thought he would "never again have to witness the wide-scale suffering of innocent civilians, nor the betrayal and abandonment of our countrymen when they need us the most. But that was before Katrina. That was before a storm with greater impact than the bomb blast that struck Hiroshima peeled the face off southern Louisiana."

In The Tin Roof Blowdown, bounty hunter and Robicheaux friend, Cletus Purcel, is trying to pick up some bail skips right before Katrina hits. But the same men that Purcel is after end up being wanted for a host of other crimes as well. Not only that, but they've stolen a fortune from the top Mafioso in New Orleans. So not only are the cops looking for them, but some unsavory characters are as well. How these characters all converge is vintage Burke.

One of the things I like best about Burke's books is that he makes the locale a major player in his stories. He has a love/hate relationship with New Orleans and calls her the Whore of Babylon. When driving through the ruined streets, he muses "New Orleans had been a song, not a city. Like San Francisco, it didn't belong to a state; it belonged to a people." He describes southern Louisiana with lush brushstrokes, from the bayous to the wildlife to the marshes. But where he outdoes himself in The Tin Roof Blowdown is in his descriptions of post-Katrina New Orleans. No pictures that you may have seen will accurately tell the story of what happened to this historic city as well as Burke does in narrative form. It is that vivid and that horrible.

James Lee Burke tends to publish a new Robicheaux every July. Fortunately for us, while prolific in his writing, he isn't publishing books just to meet a deadline. The Tin Roof Blowdown is the real deal.

Excellent setting & characters, depth of insight

I lived in New Orleans for >20years pre-Katrina. I had dear friends who bravely served NOLA during/after Katrina: an insurance agent, a young National Guardsman who worked at/around the Superdome during/after the storm, and a nurse who chose to stay at her post for the storm. Each suffered and survived the panic, disorder, fear, etc. described in this book. They also witnessed and experienceed moments of grace when least expected. The mystery holds the book together well. The chilling descriptions of what desperate people can do is true. Well done.

Best of the Dave Robicheaux Series

Best of the Dave Robicheaux series. Less characters than his other books, and I love how he intertwined actual events within the story itself. It's been a while since I was invested in Alafaire, but she has a really good storyline and is well-written. The only character I haven't fallen in love with is Molly, and I can't quite put my finger on the "why." Of course, Bootsie was a hard act to follow. The series was my summer reading list, and so far this is my favorite.

Open the Treasure Within

Do yourself what may be the biggest favor of your life: open your heart and mind to the wisdom in this book. Citing the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Gnostic Gospels and many others, the author reveals the essence they all have in common: the desire to reconnect us--permanently--with God/ our Higher Selves/ the kingdom of Heaven that is within us. Step by step, the author shows us how to choose our Higher Selves rather than acting out of our Lower Selves. Then the author heals this apparently dualistic way of thinking by showing us how to integrate the 'two' selves. I would consider the price of the book worth the price just for the acronym he gives to the word 'fear.'

The Seven Victories of the title are accomplishments that you, as a Divine Child, can attain. With stunning simplicity the author shows the reader the battle that goes on within each of us--and how to bring it to a peaceful end. Want peace in the world? Begin by learning how to achieve peace within. He does this by means of 7 steps to claiming our victories. I plan to concentrate on a different 'victory' each day of the week; since there are seven, this works out perfectly. At the end of each day, I shall journal the results of this focus. By doing this for an extended period of time, I hope to internalize the wisdom in this book so that I can live forevermore in contact with the Divine Within.

filled with wisdom

As an author myself, I'm aware that there are two different ways to write a book. One is to come up with the words yourself, using your own limited intelligence. The other is to basically let the words come THROUGH you, from a HIGHER intelligence. I'm not talking about "channeling," but just the act of creating from a place of oneness rather than separation.

It was obvious to me that this book was of the latter kind- it came from a place of deep wisdom and higher intelligence within Michael Jones. Therefore, I would consider it "inspired"- born of spirit. This one thing alone makes the book a quality work.

Secondly, I was amazed at the amount of true wisdom. Sometimes you can get an idea about how wise an author is by the little things they say- the details, the commentary. Not only are the major points of the book very insightful, but the explanation and detail was excellent as well.

Finally, as Michael Jones points out, there's an old saying that "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." Well, I was ready for a spiritual breakthrough, and this book definitely helped to give it to me.

I've always dealt with a lot of negative emotions like guilt, anger, and grief, and I now have a way of dealing with these kinds of emotions. Michael says that negative qualities (he calls them "lower attributes") always have an OPPOSITE ("higher attributes"). For example, there is love vs. hatred, strength vs. weakness, freedom vs. bondage, and so on. Basically, every "lower attribute" has an opposite, "higher attribute." This teaching has given me a framework to work with, and a greater clarity of purpose in terms of WHAT to do, and HOW and WHY to do it.

Basically, the book is amazing and I recommend it to anyone ready for a spiritual breakthrough.

Excellent Hands-On Suppliment

Adam's "Lecture Tutorials" collection is an excellent suppliment to any astronomy textbook. While most text books include a couple of introductory chapters on naked-eye astronomy the material included is often surface deep at best and downright confusing at worst. Much of this is because the topics covered (i.e.-the celestial sphere, daily and yearly motions of the stars, sun and moon, etc) are highly abstract and require activities that force the student to move away from memorization towards an understand of the apparent motions and what causes them.

The Lecture Tutorials are a test ed set of just such activities based on a wealth of astronomy education research. They can be used in both large scale classes and smaller groups to get students to work through the difficult misconceptions and misunderstands that oftentimes beset the subjects being studied.

The activities range throughout the standard astronomy curriculum but, in my opinion, the best activites are those that focus on the apparent motions of the Sun, Moon and stars.

I recommend this to any student trying to better understand the subject and for any educator who wants help moving their students from "fun facts" to deeper understanding.

I believe I must have a misprint as after page ...

I believe I must have a misprint as after page 104 it skips to 137.... then after page 168 it jumps back to 137 which finish back at 168. It was not even rip out, it was simply not bounded to the book. Several of the pages are needed for my class but because I am unable to turn it in, I may be deduct some points. Everyone please look through if all pages are accounted for or send it back asap. I did not and now I am suffering for it.

I ordered this book for my Astronomy class two months ago. I have been using it for my in class Lecture-Tutorials almost every class. Everything has been fine until yesterday when we were doing the assignments from page 113. I opened the book when I realized that it was missing from page 105 to 136. Missing 31 pages!!! I couldn't finish my in class assignment because of this missing pages! This is so unfair. I paid full price for this book and got an uncompleted book. And now I can't return because it has been two months. I didn't see it until I turned to these pages. Really don't want to buy it again and find pages missing since this is an important book for my class

Best combination of theory, practice and philosophy

Managers who want to be leaders need good advice on how to lead. Sims and Lorenzi provide that much needed advice, offering basic descriptions of what a person can (learn to) do to lead effectively: Articulate a vision, set goals, teach subordinates the required skills and build confidence in their ability to perform, provide models of good work, empower teams, reward performance and reprimand and correct errors. Behavior and results are important. Rather than supervise closely, good leaders can offer a "super" vision that allows people to self-manage and self-lead.
And there is more than behavior that needs to be managed. The psychology of leadership also requires attention to the patterns of thoughts employed by leaders and their followers. There are "scripts" and "schemas" that provide a structure to one's thinking. Understanding and managing these basic patterns and expectations helps a leader to facilitate progress towards wok goals and accomplishment. People are comfortable with and empowered by coherent patterns of thought.
Using short stories, models, history and personal examples, Sims and Lorenzi provide a basic education for the aspiring leadership, offering research-tested, easy-to-follow and to use advice for the leader. Applications are global in nature; this is not simply a book for American, corporate leaders. Most important, the leader will learn to teach others to lead themselves.

About the Author
A. Stephan Hamilton is the author of 'Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin, April 1945' and the previous volume in this series, 'The Oder Front 1945: Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici, Heeresgruppe Weichsel and Germany's Final Defense in the East, 20 March -4 May 1945' (both published by Helion). He has spent the majority of his spare time during the last decade researching and writing about the final months of World War II in Europe. When not writing a book, he works full time and serves as a Major in the United States Army Reserves. He is a recent graduate of the U.S. Army Reserve's Command and General Staff College and holds a B.A. and M.A. in History. He resides in Northern Virginia with his wife and two children.

Hemodynamic Monitoring, Evolving Technologies and Clinical Practice by Mary E. Lough provides an in-depth review of the current state of hemodynamics. This book is dense with information and provides a deeper understanding to even the most versed and experienced practitioner.
The content of the book was outstanding and covered many places in hemodynamic monitoring that were previously rarely discussed and difficult to find in other literary sources. This book, however, requires the reader to have at least a moderate foundation in cardiac care and hemodynamics to fully appreciate the complex topics it addresses. The many provided case studies and examples also help to enforce the clinical application of each topic and are included in almost every chapter. Overall I love the book and have referenced it many times in actual clinical practice. It is appropriate for any health care practitioner that wants to gain a much deeper understanding of the holistic picture surrounding hemodynamics and hemodynamic monitoring.

Throughout the book the reader finds a vast amount of helpful visual aids and graphics that provide written and visual modeling of the complex systems and processes associated with hemodynamics. Visual aids are also included that look at many of the devices currently in use for hemodynamic modeling and how they obtain their information within the body. These visuals were very helpful to understand many of the concepts and were written in a user-friendly way that displayed all useful data and the processes clearly.

The combination of visual and written education was perfect for conceptualizing the many multifaceted processes, monitoring tools, and pathophysiology. I have not seen a book on the market at this time that addresses the breadth of content in as deep of detail and clarity as this book.

Opera Stories for Children

I bought this book for my 8-year-old granddaughter prior to taking her to a live HD broadcast from the Met of Die Walkure. It presented the stories in simplified form, though not always true to the Wagner version. For example, at the end of the book, Siegfried and Brunnhilde return the ring to the Rhine maidens and, it is implied, live happily ever after. She loved the book, and read it cover to cover. It was a good way for her to become familiar with the characters and the basics of the story.

This provides a great short retelling of these old stories from which Wagner crafted his amazing operas. I could nor help but identify elements in these tales that Tolkein must have used in his Ring Trilogy. A great way, also, to introduce this to children.
