His books include "History and Geography of Human Genes" and "Genes, Peoples, and Languages." Antonio Moroni is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at the University of Parma (Italy) and member of the National Academy of Sciences (Academy of XL). Gianna Zei was Professor of Statistics and Biometry at the University of Pavia and directs the population genetics group of the CNR Institute of Molecular Genetics in Pavia.

THE classic of human population genetics

This Dover reprint of the classic human population genetics 1970's text, originally published by Freeman, will be welcome. Though factually dated by the ensuing 30 years of molecular genetic data, this remains a superb introduction to basic mathematical theory. I've used it in a grad course, and students really enjoyed it.

What I like most is that it contains a section of solved ...

It is an older textbook of human population genetics. It is well-written and explains a lot of the concepts very clearly. The book was last updated in 1999 and of course, it does not contain some of the recent results. This is a gigantic book with over 800 pages and covers a lot of topics. What I like most is that it contains a section of solved examples. It shows the complexity of the problems in population genetics and how it can be solved with mostly algebra. If you are learning population genetics, I would strongly recommend this book. But, you need patience to read through 800 pages of it.

Moderately useful book

I found this book to be of limited value. There is some good techinical information on dealing with SAG and other industry stuff but I found it wildly lacking in other areas. Kim Adelman is a Producer of short films as far as I know she hasn't actually got behind the camera. So the book wasn't very good with the whole being creative part nor paticularly inspiring. She makes everything seem real expensive and a 26 man crew to make a short! Robert Rodriguez would be turning over in his grave if he were dead. I think aspiring film makers are better off reading a "Rebel without a Crew" first make few films ,learn by doing, then add this book so they can understand how a producer thinks.

Informative and Entertaining Guide For Beginning Filmmakers

I've been thinking about making a short film for ages, and was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of this book. After reading it, I feel inspired to actually make it happen. There's a great mix of encouragement and practical advice here that helped organize my thoughts regarding the steps I need to take to make my short. The anecdotes from veteran short filmmakers, including Kim herself, were especially helpful. I appreciated that no set-in-stone rules were set down, but the worst mistakes to be avoided are still spelled out.
I'd say it's a must-read for anyone who's going to make a short and hasn't had much experience with production. But it could also be helpful to more seasoned filmmakers who want insight into aspects of the process they haven't given much thought to, especially marketing and online distribution.

The Ultimate Filmmakers Guide to Short Films: Making It Big In Shorts should be read by every aspiring filmmaker. Kim Adelman lays out everything you need to know in an informative, witty, and intelligent way. She tells you about the mistakes that others (including herself!) have made, so that you don't make the same mistakes.
And as someone who has worked at a number of film festivals over the years, I found her insights into dealing with festivals, and planning a promotional, marketing and festival strategy for your film to be spot-on. I'll be recommending this book to every filmmaker (and filmmaker wannabe!) I know.

About the Author
Peter Schoenaerts studied Literature and Linguistics (Dutch and English) at the University of Louvain and trained as an actor at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He co-authored several language manuals and other publications (a.o. Vanzelfsprekend, Niet Vanzelfsprekend, Go Dutch!, Thematische Woordenschat Nederlands voor Anderstaligen, Het Grote Puzzel- en Doeboek voor Anderstaligen). From 2005 till the end of 2008 he taught Dutch at one of the largest Dutch Language and Culture schools: 't Klokhuis (in New Jersey and New York). He currently works for the Taaluniecentrum Dutch as a Foreign Language in Brussels. He is also an actor and director.

Dutch Learners - An easy reading play

"Meer is altijd beter" is a learning play that helps fill the hole of intermediate language learning after you finish beginning Dutch courses like Rosetta Stone levels 1-3. This play introduces the top one thousand words and by their context in the play dialog, the meanings of the new vocabulary is fairly easy to decipher. It is fun reading, you'll chuckle at least a couple times during your reading. There is a nice intro on how to best use the play and good follow-on exercises in the back. The book is fine for individual study, but really set up for classroom use. That would be fun! Not for beginning students, but an excellent resource for us "advanced beginners or intermediates". What the "Le Petit Prince" did for french students, this play does for dutch learners.

About the Author

            John E. Conklin, professor of sociology at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, was born in Oswego, New York, in 1943 and raised in Syracuse, New York.  After earning a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1965, he completed his doctorate at Harvard University in 1969 and did research at Harvard Law School's Center for Criminal Justice for one year before taking a position at Tufts, where he now offers courses in criminology, crime and the media, sociology of law, and sociology of sexual behavior.

            Professor Conklin's first book, Robbery and the Criminal Justice System (1972), was based on data he gathered in Boston.  He also wrote The Impact of Crime (1975), a study of community reactions to crime, and "Illegal but Not Criminal": Business Crime in America (1977). The first of nine editions of Criminology appeared in 1981.  Art Crime--a study of theft, forgery, and fraud in the art world--was published in 1994.  His New Perspectives in Criminology (Allyn & Bacon, 1996) is an edited collection of papers published by leading criminologists during the 1990s.  In 2003, Allyn & Bacon published Professor Conklin's Why Crimes Rates Fell, an examination of the reasons that crime declined so dramatically in the 1990s.

"Criminology", co-authored by Leonard Glick and J. Mitchell Miller, is a comprehensive and well-written entry-level guide to the complex and controversial topic of criminology as practiced in the United States. "Criminology" is specifically organized to facilitate the work of the instructor and the student.

Each of fourteen chapters covers basic definitions, theory, and observed behavior for some category of criminal activity and/or the police, judicial, and correctional response. The basic text presents narrative, graphics, and focused text boxes, augmented by excerpts from a variety of authors with more indepth analysis of various problems. Each chapter comes with self-testing questions to reinforce learning. The layout of each chapter easily translates to a classroom presentation.

Presentation for the most part is even-handed, in recognition that criminology does not have perfect analyses or answers for what is very complex human behavior. Multiple theories of criminology are presented without predetermined selection of a single answer. Contrasting arguments for and against incarceration, capital punishment, and punitive sentences for drug-related offenses provide a good basis for further exploration in a classroom or seminar environment. The focus is on the United States, although some anecdotal context is provided for other nations. The text has been updated to include consideration of crimes of recent or renewed emphasis such as international terrorism and human trafficking.

"Criminology" is very highly recommended as a great teaching resource for college entry-level criminology classes.

I needed this book for class, but didn't want to pay the hefty price tag attached to it. So I ended up buying used on Amazon for the first time. I saved well over $100 doing this. The book was in great condition. No pen marks or highlights. Definitely recommend!! I cant tell enough people how much money you save when you use Amazon as an alternative for buying and renting textbooks.

Too many mistakes

This book has an extraordinary number of errors. The synthesis of methamphetamine (scourge of the west) is described according to a method used by bikers in the seventies. Rape is defined as forcible sex between a man and a woman. One of the causes of violence is a high sugar diet. Feminism can lead to violence. Descriptions of criminal law are weak and full of errors. This is a bad book.

About the Author
Clifton Crais is Professor of History and Director of the Institute of African Studies at Emory University, where he teaches courses on history, violence, and memory.  He holds a doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of five books, including Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus, with Pamela Scully. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

A compelling memoir and much more

In this beautifully written memoir Clifton Crais skillfully intertwines the tools of an academic historian and advances in neuroscience with his own struggles to come to terms with his difficult and disjointed childhood.

Drawing on the skills of his craft, Crais discovers that his family’s narrative of past splendor as descendants of “good, pure, French stock” living among New Orleans Creole elite on Esplanade Avenue leaves out more humble beginnings, sugar fortunes made and lost, miscegenation and lives lived “amongst the blacks, prostitutes, street musicians, dockworkers, gamblers and petty crooks.” These historical revisions frame his Aunt Cecile’s madness and his mother’s profound sense of disappointment and loss. For Crais and his siblings, poverty and neglect take a heavy toll in the form of depression, substance abuse and broken relationships. Against all odds, Crais achieves both personal and professional success. In this sense, History Lessons is a captivating story of struggle and triumph which is reason enough to read it.

But History Lessons is much more. Drawing on contemporary debates within history and advances in neuroscience, Crais honestly and poignantly conveys his own struggles to remember and reconstruct his painful past. Born at a time when his parents’ marriage was disintegrating, Crais drifts through childhood moving sporadically between New Orleans, Texas, California, Tunisia and Maryland in the care of various relatives - his mother and grandmother, his father and a succession of wives, his older sister and her family. Often on the edge of fending for himself, as a child he yearns to be cared for and wanted. He struggles to remember the facts, yet has clarity on the emotions he experienced. Despite his success, Crais remains haunted by his early life. Through his elegant prose Crais poignantly conveys the complexities of memory – grappling with what is real and what is imaged, how emotions and senses telescope the past into the present, and the glaring silences around which stories are told.

History Lessons provoked me to think about my own history and the stories we all tell about our lives. They are likely more complicated, more fragile, and more elusive than we realize. I highly recommend History Lessons.

A Fantastic Read

Written with elegance, this is a heartbreaking story of poverty, childhood, and a historian's quest to discover a personal past. Craig's uses his journey to clearly describe the very human neurobiology of memory making and ultimately the production of history. I could not put this book down.

Beautifully written, thoughtful but not candy coated. unsettling familiar events. Lessons, grievances, things never quite clear nearly come to light, understanding of the need to make sense of that which makes no sense.
