great book, great artist!
By A Customer
Neville brody is one of the best contemporary graphic designers, he needs no further presentation. This book is a collection of some of the great works he produced, going from magazine editorials and stamps, to publicity. It is a great inspiration source for me, for those working with graphic design and for those who simply like to appreciate a good artist an his work. Color pictures printed on good paper, very well produced. Excelent compillation of works. Enjoy it

The future revealed
By A Customer
This is one of those books I constantly use for reference. Nevill Brody for those of you who dont know is one of Englands preminent designers. This book is ricly colored and pleaseing to look at. As you would expect from the man who did the original layout for The Face and many other fringe magazines. The only problem I had with this book was the lack of relavent commentary from Brody himself. However, I feel this is still (along with Vol.1) a must read for and aspiring graphic designer.

Neville Brody, a great modern designer
By prakazel@earthlink.net
In this second collection of Brody's work, it presents to us his use of the computer and its influence on his design. While his older work was more conservative, yet still radical for its time, his recent work truly embraces the digital age. It surpised me how easily Brody , a more traditional designer, can translate his ideas to a digital medium, but his work will continue to drive young designers to "copy" or to be inspired by his work.

The Circle of Ceridwen: Book One of The Circle of Ceridwen Saga (Volume 1), by Octavia Randolph

The English Adventure loved by over 100,000 readers in 125 countries...

It is the year 871, when England was Angle-Land. Of seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, five have fallen to the invading Vikings. No trait is more valued than loyalty, and no possession more precious than one's steel. Across this war-torn landscape travels fifteen year old Ceridwen, now thrust into the lives of the conquerors.

Lost in the frozen woods, Ceridwen is discovered by the warriors accompanying young Ælfwyn, daughter of a Saxon lord, sold against her will in marriage as part of a peace treaty with a marauding Viking war chief. Their destination is the captured fortress of Four Stones, a ruin holding glittering treasure. There Ælfwyn must keep her vow and wed Yrling - and Ceridwen must do all she can to support her new friend in the rebuilding of the ravaged village and great hall.

But living with the enemy affords Ceridwen unusual freedoms - and unlooked-for conflicts. Amongst them she explores again her own heathen past, and learns to judge each man on his own merits. Yrling's nephews Sidroc and Toki, both formidable warriors yet as different as night and day, compete to win Ceridwen for their own.

Through both guile and goodness Ceridwen and Ælfwyn begin transforming the world of Four Stones. But the threat of full-scale war escalates, and a midnight party of furtive Danes delivers someone to Four Stones who destroys the girls' hopes of peace and contentment. Now Ceridwen must summon all her courage - a courage which will be sorely tested as she defies both Saxon and Dane and undertakes an extraordinary adventure to save a man she has never met.

The first book of The Circle of Ceridwen Saga, the historical adventure saga enjoyed by thousands of readers in over 125 nations.

Review
Book One of an immersive and compelling adventure, with complex characters that mature and develop throughout the Saga. The Circle of Ceridwen takes place in late 9th century England, during the reign of King Alfred the Great, an uncertain and perilous time. Although the warrior culture is foremost, the story is told by 15 year old Ceridwen, a Welsh-Saxon girl, who is confronted with tremendous physical challenges, moral decisions, and conflicting loyalties. It is also a subtle examination of the theme "Who is my enemy?"

From the Author
Epic...immensely satisfying...an impressive achievement - Historical Novel Society

Randolph's epic four-part Viking-era saga takes place in a ninth-century world caught in the grinding gears of multiple religions - the old Saxon gods, the gods of the invading Vikings, plus the Trinity and attending saints of the hardscrabble Christianity that is trying with uneven success to implant itself in England and Ireland.

The bulk of this story-cycle centers on a young woman, Ceridwen, as she grows into womanhood and has a series of adventures in a world made increasingly violent and unpredictable by the clashing of rival armies and faiths. Randolph has extensively researched her chosen era, and her books are very intentionally pitched at a pre-modern pace, designed to unfold gradually despite their sometimes-hectic action segments. We follow Ceridwen through fractured friendships, tormented loves, and the tragedies of war.

The broader, relaxed tempo of the four novels really allows her -- and her world -- to become real in the reader's imagination, and this aura of complexity is enhanced by the fact that Randolph never stoops to one-dimensional bad guys, be they Christian monks or Viking raiders.

Each of these volumes is immensely satisfying, and the four-book sequence as a whole is an impressive achievement. - Historical Novel Society February 2015

I will be reading the rest of the series
By Susan
VERY enjoyable and interesting book - I felt entirely 'present' in Ceridwen's world with her, although slightly apart nonetheless. It is presented in first-person perspective of a young lady's experiences and her thoughts on them. Sometimes slow going or maybe one could say leisurely. This is not a bodice-ripper or a fast-paced page turning thriller but a immerision into a historical time period seen from the perspective of an ordinary - yet far from ordinary - character.

The relationship dynamics the eponymous young woman finds herself in made me question a bit more deeply some of my own biases and leanings - which I am still turning over in my thoughts. Sheds light a bit on certain things I've seen in real life - curious that, literature makes us think and reflect on life in general. I must say this book then qualifies as Literature.

It is very well written if at times paced at a pace somewhat less than griping page turning excitement. It was a longish read, and took me a longer time to complete than is my norm, but this book is beyond the usual norm and has much to recommend: Authentic period ambience, compelling characters, historical relevance, humanity reflected, and a young girl's heart followed through challenges beyond her years and expectations.

I did indeed enjoy too the educational value of learning about "the old gods" of the pre-Christian Anglo-Saxons and still trying to understand the Anglo-Saxon vs. Danish invaders history, probably because I know so very little of it academically ~ I suppose I could read history books instead of historical fiction but, nah, I like the fictional history. I won't be defending my own academic theories by what I read so absolute historical accuracy I can neither comment on nor get too worked up for either.

Definitely looking forward to Book #2 and #3. I will be reading the rest of the series.

Historical tale about Vikings, Saxons, love and adventure
By PaulaW
The story is set in 9th century England during the war between the Saxon's and Vikings as seen through a courageous young lady's eyes. This book is the first in a trilogy and has a fairly simple story that lacks the usual twist/surprises and complicated plots that most authors seem to find as a must. I will admit that in the beginning I found it a bit boring but by the end I was surprised at how absorbed I had become. Much of this was due to the author's skill at character development and detailed writing. The first book can stand alone but I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy to find out what happens too many of the characters.

Melt away into the past...
By Amazon Customer
I've read this book years ago and was delighted to see it finally available on Amazon and picked it up to read again! From the beginning its very easy to immerse yourself into the world of Ceridwen and get caught up in the details and concerns of their time.

It is so researched and well thought out that the seamless storyline simply enfolds the reader. If you're curious about the time period, enjoy historical novels at all or long for an enduring love story that carries through the ages... this book is the start of a wonderful journey for you!

A collection of all the stories published in Kafka's lifetime
By Bryan Byrd
This review is for the Schocken Books edition of Franz Kafka’s THE PENAL COLONY, first published in 1948, and then in this paperback format in 1961 and reprinted multiple times. It contains the longer stories of CONVERSATION WITH THE SUPPLICANT, THE PENAL COLONY, THE METAMORPHOSIS, THE JUDGMENT, A HUNGER ARTIST, and A COUNTRY DOCTOR. Also included are eighteen shorter pieces—some as short as a paragraph—gathered under the title MEDITATIONS, and three examples of Kafka’s occasional and diary writing, as well as an epilogue by Max Brod, Kafka’s literary executor.

I include the above information because there are so many editions of Kafka’s work around that it is relatively easy to find yourself with two or more copies that essentially repeat the contents, which is what happened to me. I also have a copy of Kafka’s The Complete Stories, also published by Schocken, which contains all of the stories in this earlier copy (plus more), save the three pieces of occasional writing/diary examples. Look for a review of that work to follow this one.

One of the interesting facts of this earlier edition is that it contains all the writing that Kafka actually saw published in his lifetime, save THE STOKER, which is conventionally placed as the opening chapter of Kafka’s unfinished Amerika. Near the end of his life, Kafka spoke to his good friend Max Brod, and told him that, ‘Of all my writings the only books that can stand are these: The Judgment, The Stoker, Metamorphosis, Penal Colony, Country Doctor, and the short story: A Hunger Artist…’ In fact, Kafka had asked his friend to destroy the rest of his writing, but Brod had plainly told him that he would do no such thing. So, in good conscience, Brod eventually published every scrap of paper that Kafka had given him prior to the time that tuberculosis finally carried away the writer.

Despite the powerful impact of The Trial (and, I assume, The Castle, which I have not read as yet), I like the mental exercise of taking just these examples—the ones Kafka felt confident enough to relinquish—and forming a picture of what he was trying to communicate. Momentarily setting aside his longer work, these shorter pieces are like fundamental clues, which, in turn, lead me to subtly different conclusions about novels like THE TRIAL, or even AMERIKA, than I might have arrived at without them. In an effort to not be too opaque, and yet leave room for other reader’s own conclusions, I’d say that reading these short stories makes me evaluate a novel like THE TRIAL as a personal story rather than a social one.

Anyway—there is no doubt in my mind that Kafka’s legacy was cemented with The METAMORPHOSIS, and from which the term Kafkaesque undoubtedly arose, which seems to me to be misapplied as much as not. That story is surely the one most readers are acquainted with, and I found it still affecting, thirty some years after the first time I read it. But either because of familiarity with that story, or just that I’m in a different stage of life, I thought THE PENAL COLONY was far and away more affecting. Not that that means I had a lot of success deciphering it—in a way, it reminded me a lot of the play Oedipus Tyrannus, in that it left me slightly bewildered as to where the story’s power came from, even though it was deeply stirring. Some commentary I read on THE PENAL COLONY made much of the religious symbolism in the story, which is definitely there, though it seemed to me that Kafka succeeded somehow despite some of this symbolism, which, by the end, is almost ham-handed.

Another treat were a few of the stories grouped under A COUNTRY DOCTOR and A HUNGER ARTIST, none of which I’d read before. Often these felt dream-like, as if they were Kafka’s transcription of actual dreams, others were more allegorical. If there is a use for such a word as Kafkaesque, my own opinion is that the definition is to be found here, in these stories, rather than as simply a synonym for ‘bizarre’. But more than this, in the end, I felt that by reading them, I gained a much deeper appreciation for Kafka as an artist. Somehow, considered only through the public perception of them, I’d begun to think of Kafka’s success with THE TRIAL and THE METAMORPHOSIS as almost accidental. But now, I feel the stories included here have helped me to see a more discernible vision in all of Kafka’s work, which also help me to extract a deeper appreciation for his most popular.

Self-Deception, by Herbert Fingarette

With a new chapter

This new edition of Herbert Fingarette's classic study in philosophical psychology now includes a provocative recent essay on the topic by the author. A seminal work, the book has deeply influenced the fields of philosophy, ethics, psychology, and cognitive science, and it remains an important focal point for the large body of literature on self-deception that has appeared since its publication.

How can one deceive oneself if the very idea of deception implies that the deceiver knows the truth? The resolution of this paradox leads Fingarette to fundamental insights into the mind at work. He questions our basic ideas of self and the unconscious, personal responsibility and our ethical categories of guilt and innocence. Fingarette applies these ideas to the philosophies of Sartre and Kierkegaard, as well as to Freud's psychoanalytic theories and to contemporary research into neurosurgery. Included in this new edition, Fingarette's most recent essay, "Self-Deception Needs No Explaining (1998)," challenges the ideas in the extant literature.

A keystone in the slippery debate
By Mr. Max
If you are willing to take a deep dive into the slippery topic of self-deception, then this book is the book for you. The author takes a decidedly philosophical and academic knife to the topic. Usually, I don't like this kind of approach because it's not a "page-turner." In fact, it's a difficult book to read. Thank goodness it's short.

However, given the deep challenges associated with understanding the dynamics of self deception, the author's argument makes more sense because he does a great job outlining the failures of the extant literature before he attempts to reframe the problem, which he does brilliantly. The idea that self deception is not a problem of belief systems but rather an issue of identity; that is, fractures, dissociations, and "disavowals" related to one's identity concept makes perfect sense.

After reading this book, I see the world in an entirely new way. Highly recommended.
